Practicing Clinical Instructor: Anecdotal Report
Practicing Clinical Instructor: Anecdotal Report
SUBMITTED TO:
AIM: to establish rapport with the the BSN 2 students and guide them during their delivery room
exposure in Davao Medical School Foundation, Inc. Hospital
ACTION:
I arrived at school early and timed in, afterwards me and my group mates went to our assigned
area, which is the DMSFH delivery room in the second floor, there, I saw our students who arrived on
time together with us and we all waited together outside the dressing room for ma’am Pangan, when
maam Pangan arrived, we also changed into our scrub suit attire and received the endorsement
together, we only had one patient for the day so we decided that we would group the students by pair
and each pair will spend two hours monitoring the patient throughout the shift, while us, the practicing
clinical instructors, will supervise each pair during their monitoring, the students helped in changing the
bed linen, assisting the patient in and out of bed and monitoring her progress of labor/ contractions.
After lunch, we gave the students a pre-test of 10 items to test their knowledge about
intrapartal care and we distributed their individual requirements which consisted of 1 reading, 1 nursing
care plan and 1 case review about 1 complication of pregnancy we let them choose randomly, we also
required them to submit drug study and a student profile, all due next Tuesday, by 2:30 PM we were
out, we reminded the students to have their case review ready tomorrow as they will have to present it
instead of going on duty since maam Pangan won’t be around, by 3 PM we timed out.
REACTION:
Today was my first day as a practicing clinical instructor, I felt a mixture of anxiety and
excitement and doubt as well, I was worried about how this duty will be like especially that it have been
a long time since I went on duty in the delivery room, I was also nervous about how the students will
think of me and their attitudes and expectations, but as I interacted with the students, I was glad they
were really respectful and cooperative, they really listened to our instructions and looked up to us for
guidance and advise, they were also nervous especially that it was their first time monitoring but it went
well, the delivery room nurses were very accommodating and allowed the students to try monitoring,
the students were amazed with the experience afterwards (feeling a contraction), somehow, I was able
to see myself in my students and how I was two years ago, I realized I have improved much since then
and now I somehow have more knowledge and experience that I can share with the students, maam
Pangan was also there guiding the students and teaching them about monitoring contractions and I
could tell the students really acquired many learning today. After lunch we gave our pre quiz, so far I
could tell the students have some background about the intrapartal nursing care, which was a good
thing. So much for a first day! I look forward to what will happen tomorrow.
DAY 2: April 6, 2018
AIM: to guide the BSN 2 students during their case review presentation
ACTION:
I arrived at school early and timed in, afterwards me and my groupmates waited in the Jura Park
for our students to arrive, noting those who arrived late and required them to submit sanction reading,
by 8 AM, the students asked permission to go to the comlab and finish their respective case reviews and
we allowed them while reminding that the case presentation will start at 8:30 AM, to our surprise, we
learnt that maam dean was going to sit in during our case review presentation, which made us and our
students very nervous, two students made their presentation and maam Dean made many comments
that included the proper way of presenting a case review, the students asked to another chance to
present again after lunch so they can fully master their assigned topics, which maam dean allowed, and
we decided to resume the case presentation by 12:30 PM.
By 12:30 PM, the students were ready to present again so we started, by 1PM maam cess and
maam dean came in and listened to the different reports, they asked follow-up questions and so did we,
we also shared and added more to what the students have reported based on our own knowledge and
experience, afterwards, we gave the students a 25 items quiz about the case reviews them we dismissed
them by 2:30 PM while reminding them to do their requirements, which are due Tuesday. We checked
the quiz and then we timed out by 3 PM.
REACTION:
Today was a really stressful day, I must admit, maam Pangan was not around today and it was
up to us PCIs to supervise and guide the students, which made me kinda nervous, and knowing that
maam dean will sit in during the presentation did not help my anxiety level, the students were even
more nervous, most of them could not finish their case reviews the previous day and were racing against
the clock to finish it, by 8:30 AM, we assembled the students in the conference room started the case
review presentation, and it didnt go well, maam dean made a lot of comments about how a case review
presentation should be and I actually felt embarrassed not knowing them as a PCI infront of maam dean
and also in front of the students whome I were supposed to instruct in advance, my mistake, I assumed
the students were already familier with how a case review is presented and I just let them present the
way they know. But atleast I now know how a case review should be next time and what am I supposed
to do as a PCI.
In the afternoon, the presentation went well and there was a noticable improvement in the
performance of the students this time, which made me feel happy, In addition to their report I asked
follow up questions and added few things about their topics, I was glad that in the end they somehow
learnt alot as evidenced by their quiz score, I could say that this day was productive and full of learning
for both us and the students.
DAY 3: April 7, 2018
AIM: For the students to learn more about unit conversion, drugs and IV computation and
intrapartum and postpartum nursing care.
ACTION:
I arrived at school early and timed in, afterwards me and my groupmates waited in the Jura Park
for our students to arrive, noting those who arrived late and required them to submit sanction reading,
by 8 AM we prepared the funda lab room for our ward class and we started our discussion by 8:30 AM,
the first topic was about unit conversion, I was in charge of discussing that topic while james wrote the
formulas and examples on the board, I discussed how to convert from one unit to another “without” the
use of a calculator, I gave examples and allowed the students to solve on the white board in front of
everyone so that everyone can see how is it done and help each other, afterwards I discussed drugs and
IV computations then we gave them a 30 minutes break, when they came back, Fardejah gave an
overview discussion about intrapartal care followed by Luigi who discussed postpartum care, afterwards
we gave a short quiz about the discussion and allowed the students to have their lunch.
After lunch, we gave the students 30 minutes to review their notes and study, we had our 50-
items shifting exam in the library followed by rationalization of the correct answers, afterwards we
dismissed the students after emphasizing the importance of submitting their recquirements on time, we
timed out by 3 PM.
REACTION:
Today was our last day as PCIs and I think it went quite well, I think the students learnt alot
from us today and my effort in preparing a lesson plan did not go to waste, in the end my goal for today
was met and the studnets seemed to understand my topic despite it’s difficulty, I must admit I struggled
a little with my part since I noticed the students had difficulty in solving “without” calculator, each
student took around 5 minutes before they could get the right answer, but after they understood the
basics, they started to catch up with the discussion, I would give a question and they would solve it on
the spot. After three days of being a practicing clinical instructor, I realized that being a clinical instructor
is a very tiring but satisfying job, I felt proud of myself seeing that I actually managed to teach the
students something and gain their trust and respect. I wonder if I will become a clinical instructor one
day, well, if that happens, atleast I know what to expect .
