Finding the highest common factor and the lowest common multiple

All numbers can be written as a product of prime numbers e.g. 28 = 2 x 2 x 7.

We can use the prime factors to find the highest common factor (HCF) and the
lowest common multiple (LCM) of numbers.

Worked example: The HCF and LCM of 18 and 24

The prime factors of 18 are 2 x 3 x 3. The prime factors of 24 are 2 x 2 x 2 x 3. The

prime number factors of 18 are placed in the left hand circle (set A) and those of 24 in
the right hand circle (set B). Any common prime number factors are placed in the
middle overlapping area.

3 2x3  2x2
Lowest Common Multiple = all prime factors =
3 x 2 x 3 x 2 x 2 = 72

Student tasks

Complete the following Venn diagrams for each pair of numbers:

1. The prime factors of 12 (set A) are 2 x 2 x 3.

The prime factors of 24 (set B) are 2 x 2 x 2 x 3.
