The course aims to introduce students to the subject of development economics,
which draws on several branches of economics; and to develop their understanding of

growth: Classical and neoclassical theories, Marxian and dependency theories,

economics. The industrialization imperative, agricultural transformation and the

environment. Population growth, migration and the unemployment problem. The
market mechanism and the role of the state as an agent of development. The debt
problem and macroeconomic stabilization. International institutional linkages: the
IMF, the World Bank, and foreign aid. Development economics in practice: the IMF
program in Turkey.
Students should have developed an analytical perspective on the various theoretical
and applied policy issues involved in the economic development and growth process
Outcomes of developing market economies; have knowledge of the economic literature on this
topic; and develop an in-depth understanding of a particular topic that they have
selected to study and write a term paper .
