Parañaque City is known for its trades of salts, fishes, shoes and rice to the
Asian traders. They trade goods to other Asian countries such as Japanese, Chinese,
Indians and Malays even before the Philippines were conquered by the Spaniards.
The origin of the name Parañaque got from the legend that long ago, in the
mouth of a river, there was a balete tree that looks like a majestic ship. It got its name
Palanyag which means point of navigation from the term “palayag”. Another version
was, the natives living close to Manila Bay whose main livelihood is fishing or
paglalayag. The eastern part where Muntinglupa was located, they were rice farmers
who met the fishermen and then they had a fest and got drunk from drinking too much
tuba. The fishermen stated that they should name it Palalayag due to their livelihood,
while the farmers initiated that they should call it Palayan for good will. They come up
with an idea of combining the two words which soon came to be “Palanyag”, the old
name of Parañaque.
Also, there was another version of where it got its name, it is during the Spanish
colonization. A Spaniard rode carriage to go to a specific place. When he reached the
place, he said “Para aqui, Para aqui” which means stop. The coachman did not
understand and thought it was the name of the place, “Para aqui” became the name
of the place which later became Parañaque.
The people of Parañaque became loyal to their oppressors, the Spaniards and
keep giving services to them. It all change when a Chinese pirate invade the town but
the Parañaqueños successfully prevented the invasion. Many lives were sacrificed
and the horrible battles was named “Red Sea Incident”. Parañaqueños remained loyal
to the Spaniards preventing different invasion, but their loyalty changed when
Katipunan was created. They began being independent and fight for independence
against the Spanish.
Now, Parañaque remained one of the major trades and business center of the
Philippines. They are known for their wet and dry goods. Fishing industries
continuously develops as well as their markets. It is now a home of warm and
hospitable Filipinos. Also became a second home for foreigners who is currently living
in the city and loves the country.
