Lesson: Were you out last night?/ Verb to be – Simple Past
Date: April 6th, 2017
Aim: the students will use the English language to communicate orally and in writing about past states
and actions.
Objectives:
- SWBAT use the past forms of the verb to be – was/ were in sentences of their own
- SWBAT use the Past Tense Simple of to be to describe and inquire about past states and actions.
Skills: speaking, reading, listening, writing
Audio-visuals: textbooks, blackboard and chalk, students’ notebooks, worksheets, video projector, CD
player
Assumption:
- The students know how to use the verb to be in the Simple Present Tense
Activity 1
Warm-up The T greets the students and has a short conversation about their homework.
Homework check-up The T asks the students to present their projects “Why do we like Britain?’
They perform the roles they were given the previous class: famous British characters, scientists, writers,
British culinary traditions and sports.
Estimated time: 10 minutes

Activity 2
Lead-in The T gives open practice across the class. She asks the Ss ‘warmer’ questions regarding their
roles - Who was Isaac Newton? / Who was Harry Potter? – and elicits answers He was a scientist / He
was a wizard.
I am a teacher. Yesterday I was a teacher, too. What about you? You are a student. Yesterday you were a
student, too.
The T writes on the blackboard the forms was and were. T and Ss decide the rules of forming the past of
TO BE
Estimated time: 5 minutes
Interaction: T-Ss

S – S Game: S1: Who were you with yesterday? S2: I was with Justin Bieber
S1: Where were you with yesterday? S2: I was in Hawaii.

The Ss sing and then they are asked to place the correct personal pronouns before the forms written on the
blackboard.
The T asks the students to use to be in the Simple Past after certain subjects - orally
Example:
T: Lucy
Ss: was
T: the children
Ss: were and so on.
Then, the Ss use was and were in sentences of their own.
Estimated time: 10 minutes

Activity 4
The Ss are asked to listen to the CD and read the text silently. Ex. 1/page 92. Then they read the text on
roles. Text comprehension ex. 2/page 93.
Ss must identify in the text the sentences that contain was and were.
Estimated time: 10 minutes
Interaction: S-S, individual work
Skills: listening, reading, speaking
Activity 5
The Ss are given worksheets they must fill in individually.
Estimated time: 10 minutes
Interaction: individual work
Skills: writing
Activity 6
T checks Ss’ answers and assesses everyone’s activity during the English class.
Estimated time: 5 minutes
Interaction: T-Ss
Skill: speaking
