KPMG R.G. Manabat & Co. celebrates 10
years with a new milestone
23 February 2017
KPMG R.G. Manabat & Co. (KPMG RGM&Co.) – a member firm of KPMG International
– marks its 10th anniversary with a lookback on its quality growth story and a transition
to new leadership to further strengthen its legacy.
The beginning of the KPMG RGM&Co. story dates back to 2007, when KPMG
RGM&Co. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Roberto G. Manabat, together with
Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer Emmanuel P. Bonoan, embarked on
building what would become one of the strongest professional services firms in the
country. Guided by the KPMG values of excellence, trust, and commitment to the firm’s
clients and people, they assembled a dynamic team of young leaders to continually
motivate the rest of the organization – providing audit and assurance services, and
advising clients across a diverse range of industries on their multifaceted business and
tax needs.
As with any pioneering endeavor, however, the early years of the firm saw its share of
challenges. “We had to prove to our international partner, KPMG, that our governance
processes met the highest standards,” Manabat recalls. “This meant adopting new ways
of implementing decision-making; ensuring the buy-in of partners, principals and staff;
and communicating our philosophies, strategic directions to everyone in the firm.”
In the face of all the hurdles, the intrepid team persevered, the tenet of quality growth
pushing them forward. The past ten years made an interesting journey for the growing
band of resilient professionals as they have developed into one cohesive team, each
day affirming their commitment to be relevant to the firm’s clients and the Philippine
business community.
Bonoan noted that the Firm’s current leaders have since been followed by a succession
of young and bright partners who have established new service lines. Thus, from 250
people, KPMG RGM&Co. now boasts of 1,000 dedicated employees housed in its own
building, the KPMG Center. This corporate headquarters along Ayala Avenue in Makati
City serves as a shining testament of its commitment to quality growth – the core of the
KPMG RGM&Co. story. Top-notch talents will continue to lead the firm to “expand our
markets, clients, and service offerings, all the while never forgetting that we exist to
serve our clients,” says Bonoan.
To continue its growth story, the firm recently announced that this year is a transition
year as Sharon G. Dayoan assumes chairmanship starting 1 January 2018 with the
support of Chairman Emeritus Roberto G. Manabat, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating
Officer Emmanuel P. Bonoan and Vice
Chairman and Head of Advisory Henry D. Antonio.
Even as it stands as one of the top tier tax firms in the Philippines and the fastest
growing practice within the KPMG network in the Asia Pacific, KPMG RGM&Co. refuses
to rest on its laurels, forging ahead through constant innovation and the relentless
desire to better serve its clients and its own people.

Washington Z. SyCip[1], PLH BOLk RNO1kl (30 June 1921 – 7 October 2017) was a Filipino
accountant. He was the founder of the accounting firm EY SGV & Companyand the Asian Institute of
Management.

Career[edit]
After World War II, SyCip was discharged from the US Army and returned to Manila at age 24. He
initially taught accounting at the University of Santo Tomas and two other colleges. He decides
against joining one of the British accounting firms returning to the country following the war
reasoning that only a white person could become a business partner in such firms.[3]
In March 1946, he opened W. SyCip & Company with a desk in his brother Alexander’s law office in
Binondo.[6] He eventually partnered with Alfredo M. Velayo and Ramón J. Gorres to form what is now
known as SGV & Company (SGV). SyCip earned a Master of Science in Commerce from Columbia
Business School.[7]
By 1958, SGV was already the biggest accounting firm in the Philippines and already overtook
Fleming & Williamson the then largest British firm operating in the country. He retired as chairman of
SGV in 1996 but remained involved with the firm[3] until his death.
In 1968, he co-founded the Asian Institute of Management in the Philippines and served as chairman
of its board of trustees and board of governors. He was the first chairman of the Euro-Asia Center
of INSEAD, a leading graduate business school, in Fontainebleau, France.[8]
SyCip was a founding governor of the Wharton School's Lauder Institute.[9]
Death[edit]
SyCip died on October 7, 2017 aboard Philippine Airlines Flight 126, which took off
from Manila bound for Vancouver with continuing service to New York City. He was with his son,
George SyCip, and an assistant, Roberto Cabilles.[2] He died before reaching Vancouver.[10]
Legacy[edit]
Flowers displayed at the Washington SyCip Park shortly after his death.
As of December 2016, SGV & Company (SGV) continues to be the largest accounting firm in the
Philippines, auditing about half of 304 publicly listed companies in the Philippine Stock Exchange.
SGV has stiff competition from rival firms, Punongbayan & Araullo, KPMG RG Manabat & Company,
and Reyes Tacandong & Company, which were established by former business partners of SGV.[11]
The Washington SyCip Park in Makati, Metro Manila was named in his honour on the occasion of his
85th birthday.[12]
The Ayala Foundation and the Jollibee Group Foundation launched fundraising for the "INSEAD
Washington SyCip Scholarship" for Filipino MBA students in honour of SyCip.[13][14]
