Homework 7: AMATH 353 Partial Differential Equations and Waves Weston Barger Summer 2016

This document is a homework assignment for a partial differential equations and waves course. It contains two problems asking students to solve initial value problems involving ut + tuux = 0 and ut + uux = 0, plot the characteristic lines, and determine from the plots how long the solutions are valid. Students are also asked to include the code used to generate the plots. A bonus problem from another exercise is also listed. The document provides instructions for two analysis problems and requests plot generation and code submission.

AMATH 353

Partial Differential Equations and Waves

Weston Barger
Summer 2016
Homework 7
Due: Wednesday, August 16, 2016

1. Consider the initial value problem

(
–∞ < x < ∞, 0 < t
ut + tuux = 0,
u(x , 0) = sin(x )

Solve this problem for t ≥ 0. Plot the characteristic lines. Using your plot, determine (approximately)
for how long the solutions are valid i.e. use your plot to graphically determine tb . Upload the code
used for generating your plots.

2. Consider the initial value problem

(
–∞ < x < ∞, 0 < t
ut + uux = 0,
u(x , 0) = –x

Solve this problem for t ≥ 0. Plot the characteristic lines. Using your plot, determine (approximately)
for how long the solutions are valid i.e. use your plot to graphically determine tb . Upload the code
used for generating your plots.

Bonus. Exercise 17.8
