Choose talent over finance, says Nico
WILLIAMS driver Nico Hulkenberg has refuted suggestions that
he will need to find sponsorship in order to keep his seat next
year.
The Grove-based team are facing up to the prospect of
losing four major sponsors next season, raising suggestions
that Hulkenberg may be dropped in favour of a driver who can
bring finance. Patrick Head has confirmed there are commercial
considerations in their driver decision for 2011.
Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado, the current GP2 champion, has
been strongly linked with Williams in the last week but Hulkenberg
feels that ability, not cash, should be the deciding factor.
“For me talent counts, I hope for the team too,” said the 23-year
old German.
“I don’t want to be a driver who gets a seat because of money. I
never wanted to, it’s not my intention.
“I would like to stay with Williams because I believe next year’s car
will be competitive, because I feel comfortable in the team and get
along with my team-mate very well. I’m hoping for a new contract,”
he added.
“What I can say is that I think the best for me and my
development is to stay with Williams, because the car can be
competitive next year.”
“I think both sides are still interested in each other and I’m quite
confident that we will get together but there is nothing official or
nothing I can openly talk about.”
Reports say Maldonado promises US$18 million, though
GPWEEK’s sources say this is wide of the mark.
Another driver possibly in contention for Hulkenberg’s seat is
Adrian Sutil, who is out of contract with Force India. As well as
being quick and consistent, Sutil is rumoured to bring around
US$4m in personal sponsorship to his current team.
