The shadow play or the wayang kulit is a popular cultural activity of the people in
Kelantan and in some parts of Perak, Terengganu and Johor in West Malaysia. There are three
distinct types of shadow play found in these states. They are Wayang Gendek, Wayang Siam
and Wayang Jawa. The Wayang Gendek is performed mainly by the Thais whereas the
Wayang Siam and Wayang Jawa are the Malay forms. The more popular one is the Wayang
Siam. Wayang Siam is almost extinct in Malaysia but there have been efforts to revive this
form of shadow play. In the state of Kelantan, there are about 300 dalang or shadow play
masters who are capable of conducting a full performance of the wayang kulit.
The Kelantan wayang kulit tells stories from the Ramayana, a famous Indian epic. It
begins with the births of Ravana and Rama and ends with the death of the former. Others are
taken from the Malay literary versions of the Ramayana and the Hikayat Seri Rama. The
older generations of dalang are very well versed with these stories.
The right dalang has to be chosen for each performance. Each dalang possesses
several different voices and narrates the stories into a tape recorder. This serves as practice
sessions to minimize mistakes at the life performance. The style of the language during
practice varies little from that of the actual performance. The language of the performance
consists of dialogues and monologues spoken by the characters and an occasional narration
by the dalang to make announcements.
The wayang kulit performance is a combination of several skills and forms of art.
These include drama, music, the making of the puppets used, the skilful control of puppets
and the ability to change the voice. Each performance consists of an introduction in two parts,
lasting about 40 minutes and the main drama, which lasts for 3 hours. When the characters in
the performance are talking, the musical orchestra is silent. However, when there is an action,
the orchestra provides music suitable to the scene. In every performance, a good dalang will
identify himslef with the parts he plays. He ensures that he ends each performance at the most
exciting scene to encourage the audience to attend the performance the following day. Thus, it
often happens that a series of performances end in the middle of an episode.
The wayang kulit is one of the many cultural heritages found in Malaysia. Only when
one witnesses the performance can one understand the ascetic value of this ‘dance drama of
the puppets’. The art of the shadow play is indeed an aspect of the Malaysian culture that has
become a tourist attraction in Malaysia. It is only in this country that such a display of culture,
talent and traditions are displayed.

It was true after all; that look.
My tall grandmother became small.
Her back round and hunched.
Her soup forgot to boil.
She went to the awful place grandmothers go.
Somewhere unknown, unthinkable.
