The Truth About Halloween
The holiday known as “Halloween” is second only to Christmas in
popularity in American spending. For years we have presented
a Christian alternative, this year called “Trunk ‘n’ Treat.” Though
many of us have fond childhood memories of dressing up like
cowboys, hobos, or angels for this holiday, we must be aware of
“the darkness” of the occult.

Yes, there really are witches who celebrate All Hallow’s Eve
on this day and consider this as a satanically sacred and powerful time. They
invoke the help of the devil as they draw this practice from the ancient Druids
of Britain, France, Germany, and Celtic lands. Before their “new year” celebration
on November 1, the ancients held a festival on the previous evening to honor
“Samhain,” the Celtic lord of death. The idea of ghosts originated from this time,
as Samhain supposedly assembled the souls of the dead and allowed them to
return to their earthly homes. The people would then dress in costumes, dance
around a fire, and tell fortunes over the bones of sacrificed animals or people. This
was the origin of fortune-telling. Suitable food and shelter were offered to these
supposedly freed spirits to appease them from casting spells or other mischief,
thus the origin of “trick-or-treating.” In some cases, the Druid priest demanded
a virgin as their “treat” to ward off evil spirits. If she was not offered, a hexagram
was placed on the door in order to call evil spirits, thus the idea of “placing a hex
on someone.”

In the middle ages, the established church drove the priests of various pagan
gods out of their sacred groves, who went underground and developed a new
satanic religion, with its witch cult and covens. They celebrated a “Black Mass”
with human sacrifices to Satan. Eight Sabbats (holidays) have thus been held over
the years by witches with the largest one occurring on the evening of October
31st. Police have found evidence of child abductions and human sacrifice along
with other instances of torture and murder during these times.

When I became your pastor in 1992, an anonymous note was left on my door
telling me that a satanic coven in the area had put a curse on me. Of course, I
claimed God’s Word: “A curse without cause does not alight” (Proverbs 26:2) and
that “no weapon formed against me shall prosper” (Isaiah 54:17). However, we
experienced unusual demonic manifestations in the first year or two here and
continued spiritual attacks. Though Satan is not all-knowing, he is very clever. He
knew the danger to his kingdom of God’s mighty work through this church. May
we continue to shine the light in the darkness as those who “search the scriptures
daily” (Acts 17:11). By the way, don’t allow Satan to get a victory by apathy or a
choice not to vote at this election time. “All it takes for evil to prevail is for good
men to do nothing.”
