Credits (Lec:Tut:Lab)= 3:1:0 (3 lectures and 1 tutorial weekly)
Prerequisites: Class XII Mathematics
Overview: We will study Ordinary Differential Equations, which is a powerful tool for solving many sciences and engineering problems. This course also covers some basic linear algebra, which is needed for systems of ODEs.
Detailed Syllabus:
1. First order ODEs: separable, exact, linear 2. Second order ODEs: homogeneous and nonhomogeneous linear, linear with constant coefficients, Wronskian, undetermined coefficients, variation of parameters 3. Laplace transform: definition and inverse, linearity, shift, derivatives, integrals, initial value problems, time shift, Dirac’s delta function and partial fractions, convolution, differentiation and integration of transform 4. Matrices: operations, inverse, determinant, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalization 5. Systems of ODEs: superposition principle, Wronskian, constant coefficient systems, phase plane, critical points, stability

Objectives:
To achieve the credit of this subject a student must –
• Learn methods to solve first-order differential equations.
• Learn application of first-order ODE to model common problems in life sciences, physics and chemistry. • Learn to solve linear differential equations of higher-order using several methods. • Learn to use Laplace transform methods to solve ODE. • Learn basic elements of linear algebra such as eigenvalues and eigenvector. • Learn to solve systems of differential equations and qualitative analysis.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of course, a student must be able to –
• Solve linear differential equations with initial condition using several
methods (separable, exact method, Bernoulli), and understand the meaning of existence and uniqueness of solutions.
• Identify linear independence of solutions using Wronskian. • Solve second and higher order ODE using variation of parameters. • Identify and solve Cauchy-Euler equations. • Use the method of Laplace transforms to solve higher order differential equations. • Understand basic linear algebra such as matrices and their operations. • Solve system of ODE and identify the qualitative behavior of steady state.
