EXPERIMENT# 11

Experiment Title: Oil analysis

Objectives: To determine acid value in the given sample of oil.

Apparatus required: Oil sample, titration flask, burette, pipette, beaker, weighing balance.

Chemicals required: N/10 NaOH, 1% alcoholic solution of phenolphthalein, neutralized alcohol.

Procedure:

Take 4-5 grams of given sample of oil in a titration flask. Add 50 ml of neutralized
alcohol in the titration flask , thoroughly mix it. Heat the contents of titration flask on water bath to boiling
temperature followed by the addition of 1% alcoholic solution of phenolphthalein. Titrate it against N/10
NaOH till pink colour which persist for about 10 seconds arises. . The boiling should be carried out very
slowly on oxidizing flame and titration is carried out at boiling point. The volume of N/10 NaOH is
noted down and take three readings.

Observations and Calculations:

1. Weight of oil sample taken = 4.1 g
2. Volume of neutralized alcohol added = 50 mlIndicator = erichrome Black-T
3. Standard solution = N/10 NaOH
4. Indicator used = phenolphthalein
5. Initial colour = colourless
6. End point colour of the solution = pink (which persist only for about 10 seconds)
7. Solution taken in the burette = N/10 NaOH

Reactions:
RCOOH + NaOH → RCOONa + H2O
