Sardar Sarovar (Narmada) Project (SSP)
Background
The Narmada based Sardar Sarovar Dam is an inter-state project with the primary benefits of power
generation, irrigation and drinking water to be shared between Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh,
Maharashtra & Rajasthan. On the right bank of Sardar Sarovar Dam, a 450 Km. long Narmada Main
Canal with a head point capacity of 40,000 cusecs upto Rajasthan border is constructed. Total 38
branch canals offtake from the main Canal, which in turn provide off-take points for Distributaries,
Minors & Sub Minors to enable irrigation of total 18.19 Lac. Ha. Area in 75 talukas in 14 districts of
Gujarat. Two major branch canals, namely, Saurashtra Branch Canal and Kutch Branch Canal offtake
from the Main canal at ch.263 and ch.385 respectively. These canals convey the Narmada water to
the farthest parts of drought-prone Saurashtra region and arid Kutch region.
