American Sign Language (ASL) has a long history dating back to the 16th century. It is used primarily by the deaf community but can benefit others as well. ASL uses specific grammatical concepts like topic-comment structure and places sign before verbs for negation. However, ASL is not widely taught in schools with few university programs available. Advocates argue it should have equal status to other languages and be taught earlier. Knowledge of ASL helps promote inclusion and allows private communication. The National Association of the Deaf promotes greater recognition and teaching of ASL.

History Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet
• In the early 1500’s, the deaf community
were forgotten and neglected because
they were unable to communicate with
the people around them. It wasn’t until
the 16th century that the deaf
community were recognized and taken
care of.

declared that the deaf community

should be taught how to communicate
with others using actions and symbols.
• Geronimo Cardano’s declaration
inspired another man named Juan
Pablo de Bonet to create the first book
on sign language in 1620.
• In 1755, Abbe Charles Michel de
L’Eppe created the first sign language
school in Paris, France. First person to make sign language known in

first school for the deaf in America located in
Connecticut.

• Tense with time: If you are talking
about something involving time, it
always is placed at the beginning of
the sentence

• Rhetorical: When asking a

rhetorical question, the signer will
ask the question and answers the
question

• Negation: You can negate a phrase

by placing a negative sign before the
verb
ASL in School
Systems
• There is still only one university for American Sign
Language studies and most universities do not even
offer American Sign Language courses

• According to an article in the New York Times, there

has been a 16% rise in the study of American Sign
Language but only a few universities offer a
major/minor in the language

• Many students are very interested in American Sign

Language but are disappointed when they are
unable to partake in studying the language because
of the lack of resources

• American Sign Language is being pushed to the

curb and needs to be seen as equal to the other
languages
Who Uses ASL
• Deaf community
• People with hearing impairments but
may not be completely deaf
• People with Autism Spectrum
Disorder
• EVERYONE!!
Why ASL is Important
• ASL is helpful by making the deaf community and
people with Autism Spectrum Disorder feel apart
of their society.

• Learning ASL creates awareness and sensitivity to

cultural and language diversity

• You are able to have a private conversation in

public without anyone listening in.

• The language can be used when spoken language

is impossible such as communicating underwater
or through glass.
National Association of the Deaf
• It was created by deaf leaders who believed
in the right of the deaf community to use
sign language and to have their issues and
interests shared at a national level

• They argue that American Sign language

should be taught as soon as possible just as
other languages are taught

• The association takes pride in that American

Sign Language is their core value

• This association could be used at public

events or schools around the United States
to educate people on the importance of
American Sign Language and could be the
start of the shift in the importance of
American Sign Language in many school
systems
