3.1 - Intoduction

This study investigated the use of water hyacinth treated with sodium metabisulfite in concrete composites. Four mixtures were tested with 0%, 1%, 3%, and 5% inclusion of treated water hyacinth by weight. The objectives were to determine the compressive strength, flexural strength, and water absorption of the composites. The study aimed to address environmental issues from water hyacinth accumulation and create a low-cost building material. Testing of composite cylinders and rectangles occurred from March to April 2019.

Nowadays, discovering new ingredients for structural materials such as

natural elements is one solution of managing and treating problems associated

with natural wastes like water hyacinth. The use of water hyacinth could be a

valuable means to the formation of a composite material that can be utilized by

many people and will serve as a sustainable material especially in a building.

Statement of the Problem

This study was intended to investigate the behavior of concrete

composite with sodium metabisulfite-treated dry petioles of water hyacinth to be

used as building material especially in residential houses.

Objectives of the Study

Generally, this study investigates the effect of utilizing water hyacinth

treated with sodium metabisulfite as a new component in concrete composite.

Specifically, the study is focused to:

1. determine the compressive strength of the concrete composite;

2. determine the bending/flexural strength of the concrete composite; and

3. determine the water absorption of the concrete composite.

3

Significance of the Study

The creation of the new composite is expected to solve environmental

problems due to water hyacinth accumulation and also likely to produce cost

effective building material for sustainable purposes.

Conceptual Framework

All samples were made of precast cylindrical and rectangular concrete

composites. Four different mixtures were considered. First mixture was the

control sample having 0% of water hyacinth inclusion by weight, the second was

the samples with 1% of water hyacinth inclusion, third was the samples with 3%

addition of water hyacinth, and the fourth mixture was the samples with 5%

inclusion of water hyacinth. Moreover, the physical behavior and concrete

strength were determined and compared using statistical tools. Figure 1 shows

the conceptual framework of the study.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study was limited only to use dry water hyacinth treated with sodium

metabisulfite as an additional component to cement, sand, and gravel. Concrete

properties were limited only by determining the compressive strength, flexural

strength and the water absorption of the concrete composite.

Time and Place of the Study

This study was conducted at Pahm’s Compound, Sunrise Street,

Kabacan, Cotabato from March 11 to April 16, 2019. The specimens intended

for compression and flexural test were tested using Compression/Flexural

Machine at Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Lanao,

Kidapawan City. The water absorption test was conducted at USM-CENCOM

Laboratory Room. Producing of the dry water hyacinth and the chemical

treatment processing of water hyacinth were performed at Pahm’s Compound,

Sunrise, Poblacion Kabacan, North Cotabato.

Operational Definition of Terms

Absorption is the process by which a liquid is drawn into and tends to fill

permeable pores of the concrete composite.

Additive is use as a synonym for addition or admixture.

Aggregate is a granular material, such as sand, gravel or crushed stone.

6

Compressive Strength is the measured maximum resistance of the specimen

to axial loading applied by the Universal Testing Machine (UTM).

Concrete is a composite material that consists essentially of a binding medium

within which are embedded fragments of aggregate and water

hyacinth.

Curing is the manner of supplying moisture in the specimen by submerging it

in water within 28 days to continue its hydration in order to meet its

requirement of service.

Curing Tank is a tank will be used for curing

Density is the mass per unit volume (preferred over deprecated term unit

weight).

Flexural Strength is a property of a concrete composite that indicates its ability

to resist failure in bending.

Mold or Mould is form used in the fabrication of concrete specimens.

Oven Dry is to dry in an oven at a temperature usually between 221 and 239
○F (105 and 115 ○C) until the weight of the test specimen becomes

essentially constant.

Portland Cement is a hydraulic cement produced by pulverizing clinker

consisting essentially of hydraulic calcium silicates, and usually

containing one or more of the forms of calcium sulfate as an addition.

7

Water-Cement Ratio is the ratio of the mass of water, exclusive only of that

absorbed by the aggregates, to the mass of Portland cement in

concrete, mortar, or grout, stated as a decimal.

Water Hyacinth Fiber is the fibers harvested from water hyacinth’s stalks and

used as reinforcing fiber.
