Risk Action Impact Output: ARISE Case Studies in Disaster Risk Management

SM Prime designed their Cabanatuan mall to be resilient to flooding by including features such as a lower ground structure that allows floodwaters to enter from a nearby creek, acting as a temporary flood catchment to minimize flooding in the surrounding community. During Typhoon Lando in 2015, the mall served as a refuge for over 400 stranded people and accommodated over 400 vehicles while remaining open to serve customers and the public during the peak of the typhoon. This case study shows that additional costs to build disaster-resilient infrastructure can be recouped through avoided losses, and it cemented SM Prime's reputation for prioritizing customer needs and risk preparedness.
