Upper Gate of the House of the Lord. Ahaz his son took over.

II Kings 16: Judah Seeks Assyria’s help and Makes an Altar

• Ahaz was king of Judah and he did not the right to the sight of the Lord.
• Rezin, king of Syria, and Pekah, king of Israel, came to Jerusalem to make war and besiege Ahaz, but
they failed; but they did take some land.
• Ahaz seeked the Assyrians help so he told the king to ally with him and he would be his servant; he
also sent gold and silver from the house of the Lord. After, Israel was taken into captivity to Assyria.
• Ahaz then went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-Pileser and saw an altar; he liked the alter and sent his
people to build an exact one and told Urijah the priest to place both Lord’s altar and new altar
together.

• Hoshea became king of Israel in Samaria and he reigned for 9 years. He did evil in the sight of the
Lord, but not compared to prior kings.
• Shalmaneser, Assyria’s king, went against Hoshea and made him his vassel, so Israel paid tribute.
• Hoshea had a conspirancy, which was discovered by Assyrian king, and since no tribute was being
paid, Hoshea went to prison.
• Assyrian king besieged Samaria for 3 years. In the 9th year of Hoshea, Israel’s 10 tribes were placed
in Halah, Medes, and the Habor; this happened due to Israe’s disobedience. They deported all, but
the lowest class, to key cities in empire to enslave them/utilize their talents.
• The king of Assyria brough people from Babylon, Cuthah, Ava, Hamath, and from Sepharvaism and
placed them to live in Samaria.
• The new people occupying Samaria did not fear the Lord, so the Lord sent lions to kill them. When
the king heard this, he sent for an Israelite priest to go there to teach about the Lord. This priest
wasn’t legit; the people did fear the lord, but still followed their former rituals; hence the priest
probably didn’t teach to serve Lord only, just as Israel lived.
• 200 years later and 19 kings after Solomon, the northern kingdom of Israel fell.

II Kings 18:
• Hezekiah reigned in Judah and did right in the eyes of the Lord, despite his father being Ahaz, one of

• About 5 years after the fall of Samaria, Sennacherib, the king of Assyria went against and conquered
all cities in Judah, except Jerusalem.
• Hezekiah told the king that he did wrong and is willing to pay whatever amount he imposed. After
he paid, an army was sent against Jerusalem. The Rabshakeh tried convincing Judah to surrender,
questioning in whom they put their trust that they rebel against Syria. The commander also ridiculed
Judah for trusting a weak Egypt. They enticed them to surrender and in exchange, they’d receive
2000 horses and also tried to use demonic logic to stray from the Lord; he stated that the Lord was
in his side and that the Lord had said to destroy the land; and surrendering was what they should be
doing since its from God.
• The Judean man being spoken to asked the commander to speak Armenian so the people wouldn’t
hear the conversation, but instead the commander purposively spoke louder in Hebrew to instill
fear in the people.

was sent to Judea stating “do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you…” Then the letter
went on boasting about cities they had conquered. This was done to instill fear/encouragement.
• Hezekiah went to the house of the Lord and prayed to the Lord, spreading the letter before him.
• Isaiah the prophet said what the Lord said. There was a message for Assyrian king, stating that the
Lord was the reason for his success, not the king, and also said he was going to do the same thing to
Assyria: march them back with hooks in noses, such as they did to captives. The Lord also said that
no harm would be done to Judah.
• God had one angel destroy 185k Assyrian army men in one night. Years later, Sennacherib’s sons

the Lord and he’d be healed and live 15 more years. He would deliver him and Judah from the
Assyrians.
• Hezekiah asked for a sign of his healing so that he may go to the temple on the 3rd day. The shadow
of the sundial would move backwards, so there’d be more time in the day, such as God gave more
time for Hezekiah.
• King of Babylon sent letters and presents to Hezekiah while he was sick. At the same time, this visit
served as a way to ally together against Assyria. Hezekiah was pleased to hear that and showed
them all the treasures that they had. This showed pride/the want to please men, from Hezekiah’s
part.
• When the prophet asked what the Babylonians saw, Hezekiah said he showed them everything.
Isaiah told him that one day, everything he showed would be taken from the Babylonians. This
referred to 100 years later when King Nebuchadnezzar would take away everything- including his
sons. Hezekiah was relieved to hear that this would not happen in his lifetime; that showed his self-
centeredness.
• Hezekiah built an aqueducy to insure fresh water inside the city walls, even during sieges.
• Hezekiah died and rested with his fathers and his son Manasseh reigned after him.

had conspired against him and they made his son, Josiah, king in his place.

• Josiah was 8 years old when he reigned, and he did right in the eyes of the Lord.
• Josiah told Hilkiah, the high priest, to repair the temple with the money being brought to the
temple.
• Hilkiah sent with the scribe The Book of the Law, which was found in the temple. Shaphan read the
book to the king, and Josiah tore his clothes.
• Josiah told the priest to go inquire of the Lord, for he realized the wrath of the Lord, since his fathers
had disobeyed the words of the book.
• Huldah the prophetess told them that the Lord would bring judgement and calamity, but it would
not come in Josiah’s day, because his heart was tender.

II Kings 23: Josiah’s Extreme Reformation

• Josiah went to the people to read them the Book of the Covenant. He then told Hilkiah the high
priest to bring from the temple items made for Baal, Asherah, and other gods. He burned them in
Kidron and carried the ashes to Bethel. Ashes from wooden image were thrown on graves, as a
defilement.
• He also removed the priests who would ordain the burning in high places and believers in other
gods, worhispers of the sun, moon, constellations, etc.
• Josiah removed ritual booths and defiled the high places. Anything that was dedicated to other gods
was destroyed; he defiled the high places set up by both Soloman and Jeroboam. He also took bones
of secular prophets from tombs in mountains and burned their bones on the alter as an act of
defilement, just as prophesized years back (350 years) from the man of God.
• Joshiah demanded the Passover be kept, as it was much neglected with prior kings.
• Despite Josiah’s obendience, the Lord was still provoked by Manasseh’s actions and would still
remove Judah from his sight, although it wouldn’t be in Josiah’s lifetime.
• Pharoah Necho, king of Egypt allied with king of Assyria and went against Josiah; he died in Megiddo
and was buried in Jerusalem.
• Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah, was annoinged king and reigened at 23 yearls old for 3 months in
Jerusalem. He did evil in sight of the Lord. Pharoah Necho imprisoned him, and eventually died in
Egypt. Necho made the people pay tribute. He made Eliakim, son of Josiah, king, and changed his
name to Jehoiakim.
• Jehoiakim did evil in sight of Lord. He would give tribute to Pharoah as required and reighed at 25
years old for 11 years; he was more like a puppet king.

II Kings 24: Captivity of Jerusalem

• Jehoiakim became King Nebuchadnezzar’s vassal for 3 years. Babylon had just taken Egypt (an ally to
Judea) so after the he defeated them, the king chose to control Judea. Jehoiakim rebelled once the
king left, and the Lord sent Chaldeans, Syrians, Moabites, and Ammonites against Judah to destroy
it.
