I. INTRODUCTION
The school library is integral to the teaching and learning process of students. The
school library facilitates the work of the classroom teacher and ensures each student has
equitable access to resources, irrespective of home opportunities or constraints. It plays
an essential role in providing reliable, accessible and free educational resource center for
both teachers and students. Libraries have been around for 5,000 years and since then
it is considered as a portal of world’s knowledge long before the internet and google is
present. Unlike search engines, libraries forster critical thinking, providing students with
the skills they need to analyze, firm and communicate their ideas in enthralling ways. Most
schools has libraries to move the needs of specific courses in college but as the
information needed becomes even rarer and harder to find so in turn libraries should have
to be equally equipped for the needs of their students and have a wide variety of
resources that are reliable and readily available to cater to students’ need.
Alemna, (2000) states that for centuries libraries have served as repositories of
information and knowledge that have provided the vital underpinnings for socio-
economic, political and cultural development in any civilization. Their relationship with
cultural progress has been so interdependent that it is needless to argue whether man’s
cultural advancement merely produces libraries as by product.
In the end, we want to figure out if the school library is being used by students
here in the Angelo King International Center. In this age of information, we will be able
to see if students actually go to the library to acquire their information needed. Being
able to see and compare how these mediums of information are used by the students
could potentially help us understand these sources better and possibly improve our
learning resource centers here in De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde.
The population gathered in this research are SHRIM students who are currently enrolled
this 1st term SY 2018-2019. As an International Hospitality Management student we are
interested to know if the learning resource center (LRC) in Angelo King International
Center contributes to student learning, and helps to meet the needs of students in
collecting and gathering information. According to the registrar’s office there are a total of
2048 students in SHRIM department that are enrolled for this term. Using Slovin’s formula
and a 5% margin of error, the required number of sample is 335. The group decided to
use equal allocation. Thus the samples are randomly selected SHRIM students from 1st
year to 4th year HRIM and IHM students as the comparison groups, for a total of 200. We
will be using the Descriptive- comparative design for the research. Both courses use
online and offline sources and rely heavily on research and facts but for different
purposes. We would like to know if the Learning resource center is being useful to both
student to achieve their academic goals.

Research Question 2:
What proportion of students visit the LRC once to thrice a week, every midterms/finals week,
everyday, or never at all?
Findings:
46 students (38.3%) visit the LRC only around thrice a week. During midterms the same
amount of 46 (38.3%) visit the LRC. Everyday about 26 (21.7%) of people visit the LRC
while only 2 (1.7%) has never visited the LRC.
Conclusions:
Most people go to the LRC often but not everyday and also a large amount of people go
to the LRC when it is the Midterms/Finals week.
Research Question 3:
What proportion of students visit the LRC to sleep/nap, to study, to find a book/magazine/CD, or
to wait for next class?
Findings:
62 students (51.7%) visit the LRC to study, same as the 62 students (51.7%) is waiting
for their next class while 23 students (19.2%) go to lrc to sleep or nap and the remaining
6 students (5%) choose to find a book cd's and magazine.
Conclusions:
Most students go to LRC for studying and to wait for their next class to take a rest
Research Question 4:
What proportion of students prefer to study either at the LRC, at home, at public areas in school,
at sites outside school?
Findings:
50 students (41.7%) studies at home, 43 students (35.8%) studies at LRC, 22 (18.3%)
studies on sites outside of school and 5 (4.2%) studies on public areas of school
Conclusions:
Most of the students studies at home but there is also a large amount of students who
use LRC for studying.
Research Question 5:
What proportion of students rate the resources or facilities available at the LRC as very
satisfactory, satisfactory, acceptable, and inapplicable?
Table 5
Findings:
50.8% of people have stated that the resources found in the LRC are very satisfactory.
Only a 1.7% of people have said it is inapplicable.
Conclusions:
A very large majority of SHRIM students are satisfied with the learning resources found
in the LRC.
Statements 5 4 3 2 1 X SD
Statements 5 4 3 2 1 X SD
Findings:
Looking back at Table we can see that majority (50.8%) is very satisfied with the current
state of the LRC, while 34.2% are just satisfied with it. Comparing that too 1.7% of people
stating that it is inapplicable.
Conclusions:
Majority of SHRIM students are satisfied with the current state of the LRC.
Research Question 6:
What is the degree of agreement/disagreement of SHRIM students with the reliability of De La
Salle - College of Saint Benilde’s Learning Resource Center?
Findings: 85% or 102 respondents agreed with the reliability of De La Salle - College of Saint
Benilde’s Learning Resource Center while 15% or 18 respondents disagreed with the reliabily of
De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde’s Learning Resource Center
Research Question 7:
What improvements can be made to the LRC according to the respondents?
Findings:
Most of the suggestions from students have something to do with the ambiance of the
LRC. May it be better chairs, better ambience, extension cords for each table, etc. Another
suggestions is to upgrade the computers and for them to unblock social media such as
Facebook since this platform is often used to communicate with other students.
Lastly, another topic that is always brought up is more books. More engaging books or
interesting books that they can also read on their spare time. Most books in the LRC are
outdated or does not look appealing to students. Plus it is very daunting to look at.
Conclusions:
Students want the LRC to be more convenient. Things such as unblocking social media
to its computers, to adding more chairs and better ones show that students just want a
better LRC than the one we are getting today. They should showcase new and interesting
books often to let more people read inside too.
Step 1:
Ho: PLRC = Po There is a significant difference between the degree of
agreement/disagreement between BS IHM and BS HRIM students on the reliability of the
Learning Resource Center in Angelo King International Center?
Majority of the population of students who took the survey are highly satisfied
with the current LRC. Although it shows that they prefer to do their research
at home with 41.7 percent, it was followed by the LRC with 35.8 percent .
Provided by the percentage above, it doesn’t change the fact that most
SHRIM students find the LRC to be reliable. The study reveals that with the
current resources that the library provides, students are available to do their
school research without any added difficulty hence the question is answered
that the reliability of LRC is very high.
VIII. Recommendations:
Although most students are quite satisfied with the current LRC in Akic, there is still room
for improvement for a better Learning Resource Center. The following are compiled
recommendations of the students:
In addition to the recommendations provided, the faculty should promote the use of LRC
and help students to become more aware of the resources, and facilities that our Library
can offer.
