The Design of Tomato Paste Plant - Problem Statement
The Design of Tomato Paste Plant - Problem Statement
The Design of Tomato Paste Plant - Problem Statement
Tomatoes are grown in large and commercial scales in Nigeria, especially in the
Northern part of the country. It is consumed equally across the length and breadth of
the entire country in form of fresh tomatoes, tomato pastes, tomato puree and
tomato powder. Tomato production is seasonal and highly perishable. This has
posed a bit challenge to both consumers and farmers.
This project requires that the student group chooses a process route for a plant for
the production of Tomato powder. Each group is free to choose the source of its
tomatoes, market outlet, and plant location. The group is required to carry out a pre-
feasibility study to serve as an indicator of technical and economic viability of the
process. Thereafter, the group is required to design a process plant to produce
specified quantities of tomato powder per annum. The student is expected to justify
the choice of raw material source, market outlet, plant location, process route and
mode of operation (batch, or continuous). The Design Report is expected to address
the following;
S/No Chapter
FIRST SEMESTER
1 Pre-Feasibility Study
2 Environmental Impact Assessment
3 Raw Materials and Product Specification
4 Process Route and Equipment Identification
5 Material Balance
6 Energy Balance
7 Process Flow Diagram
8 Basic P&ID (whole plant)
SECOND SEMESTER
9 Equipment Selection and Chemical Engineering Design of a Selected Process Unit
(Main Drier)
10 Detailed P&ID around the Selected Process Unit
11 Mechanical Design of the Selected Process Unit
12 Statements of Material Handling
13 HAZOP Studies
14 Site Selection, Site Layout and Plant Layout
15 Economic Evaluation Projected Over a Fifteen-Year Period
Each group is required to submit a technical report and an administrative report on
completion of each Chapter. The Administrative report should reflect details of
discussions at meetings, attendance, and contribution by each member. All students
are required to sit for a mini test at the end of each Chapter to confirm the
contributions from each member.
Two groups shall be chosen each week to lead discussions on each of the Chapters.
On completion of the project, the remaining weeks of the second Semester shall be
spent carrying out “dry-run” of project presentation, in preparation for Final Project
defence.
The project Defence Panel will be selected from Chemical Engineers from industry,
academia and government.
