CAULKING
Operation Number(s):
On engines manufactured of aluminum the camshaft bearing housing (1) cylinder block (2) and the intermediate
section (3) may be caulked.
NOTE: The cylinder heads that are chill-cast may not be caulked.
Each individual case is assessed as to whether caulking can be carried out or not depending on the location of
the oil leakage.
2012 Volvo C30 T-5
ENGINE Engine - Overhaul Instructions
Caulking involves in the event of leakage knocking the material together using a special caulking tool.
Two caulking tools are required. Use center punches (1). Grind down the tips so they become round. One is to
be ground so the rounded tip (A) is 2 mm. The other is ground so the rounded tip (B) is 4 mm.
NOTE: Use the protective goggles supplied with the leak tracing kit.
Use an UV light to localize the pore. Carefully wash round the pore with Isopropanol. Check with a UV light
that all the oil has been removed.
If the pore is small, it is sufficient to place the tool (2 mm) directly on the pore and hit it with a copper or plastic
hammer. If the pore is larger, angle the tool (2 mm) and drive the material in a circle toward the pore (2). If
there is a lip around the pore, caulking (tool 4 mm) should be carried out in a spiral form toward the pore (3).
Drive the material toward the pore (1) using the 2 mm tool. Seal using the 4 mm tool (2).
Wash with Isopropanol. Check with a UV lamp that there is no oil around the leakage point.
Test drive for 45 minutes as set out below to reach an oil temperature of about 80°C.
Check using a UV light that the sealed area no long leaks. If leakage remains, repeat the caulking.

information in the graphics is always correct.
Use a micrometer.
Measure the out-of-round and taper of the bearing journal. Measure at a number of points laterally and
longitudinally.
For the correct values for the connecting rod bearing journals and main bearing journals, see ENGINE
(B5254T3; 2007-08, B5254T7; 2008-12) or ENGINE (B5244S4; 2007-10) .
Fig. 120: Identifying Measurement Of Radial Runout Using A Dial Indicator And Magnetic Holder
Courtesy of VOLVO CARS CORPORATION
Position the crankshaft with the two outer main bearings in the V block.
Turn the crankshaft and measure the radial runout on the other main bearing journals.
For the correct values, see ENGINE (B5254T3; 2007-08, B5254T7; 2008-12) or ENGINE (B5244S4; 2007-
10) .
Remove coke deposits. Scrape the piston ring grooves clean with a groove cleaner or a broken and filed piston
ring.
For the correct values, see ENGINE (B5254T3; 2007-08, B5254T7; 2008-12) or ENGINE (B5244S4; 2007-
10) .
For the correct values, see ENGINE (B5254T3; 2007-08, B5254T7; 2008-12) or ENGINE (B5244S4; 2007-
10) .
For the correct values, see ENGINE (B5254T3; 2007-08, B5254T7; 2008-12) or ENGINE (B5244S4; 2007-
10) .
Check first that the piston and connecting rod are marked.
Piston marking: Scrape the piston pin clean. If the marking is unclear, mark the piston with the cylinder
number and an arrow pointing to the front of the engine. Use a marker pen.
Connecting rod marking: See ENGINE (B5254T3; 2007-08, B5254T7; 2008-12) or ENGINE (B5244S4;
2007-10) .
WARNING: The lock ring can easily fly off. Wear protective goggles
Clean and check the connecting rods, caps and screws for damage, signs of wear or cracks.
The piston pin must not be loose. It should be possible to push it through the hole using thumb pressure.
The piston pin should slide through the hole with light thumb pressure.
Use a micrometer.
See ENGINE (B5244S4; 2007-10) or ENGINE (B5254T3; 2007-08, B5254T7; 2008-12) for the correct
diameter of the gudgeon pin.
The mating surface between the cap and the connecting rod is not machined. It is aligned through a dedicated
2012 Volvo C30 T-5

fracture surface.
CAUTION: If the cap is turned the wrong way and tightened, the structure of the
fracture surface will be damaged and the connecting rod must be
discarded.
NOTE: Blow clean the fracture surfaces with compressed air before reinstalling caps.
For the correct diameter of the bearing recess, see ENGINE (B5244S4; 2007-10) or ENGINE (B5254T3;
2007-08, B5254T7; 2008-12) .
CAUTION: Check that the aligner fork is unburred and round at the handle. Loosen
and apply the expander at the big-end between each alignment operation.

FIBER OPTIC CABLE HARNESS, REPAIRING
NOTE: As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years
and / or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information
in the illustrations is always correct.
The components in the infotainment system are part of an optical network, known as the MOST bus. (Media
Oriented System Transportation). The network consists of fiber optics (POF = Polymer Optical Fibers), special
connectors for fiber optics and MOST nodes, i. e. control modules which are connected to the MOST bus.
Data is transmitted via the fiber optics, for example music, in the form of light signals. The MOST bus is a ring
which must be unbroken for it to work. None of the infotainment system will work if an optical fiber breaks or
if a connector is disconnected. The ends of the fibers must also be clean to allow the light to pass.
2012 Volvo C30 T-5
ELECTRICAL Body Electrical
A fiber requires a larger bend radius than a copper cable. The bend radius must not be less than 25 mm . If the
fiber bends too much, not enough light will be let through.
NOTE: Fiber optics are sensitive to bending and pinching. Be careful when routing and
securing.
NOTE: There is one fiber for the input and one for the output signal. The system will
not work if the are interchanged.
Release the lock using a screwdriver. Remove the inner section (2).
Strip the fiber optic. Use tool see 9512868 as shown in the illustration
2012 Volvo C30 T-5

Check that the ferrule is secure and is edge to edge with the fiber.
NOTE: There is one fiber for the input and one for the output signal. If they are mixed
up the system will not work.

BRAKES Hydraulic-Vacuum-Hydraulic Brakes - Removal, Replacement And Installation
It is recommended that brake fluid is changed every other year. On cars that are exposed to heavy and frequent
braking, for example, mountain driving or driving in tropical climates with high humidity, the brake fluid must
be changed every year.
BACKGROUND
The oil must be replaced because it is hygroscopic (the fluid absorbs water molecules from the air). This
absorption of water occurs through the brake hoses and brake fluid reservoir. These components are rubber and
plastic respectively and are not completely sealed against water molecules. An increased water content in the
brake fluid dramatically reduces its boiling point and causes corrosion in the brake system components. This
results in damage to the brake system. Braking performance deteriorates markedly.
NOTE: Use only Volvo Genuine Parts brake fluid designated DOT 4+. Never reuse
brake fluid. Always keep the brake fluid sealed in the original packaging.
NOTE: Continually check that there is sufficient brake fluid in the brake fluid reservoir
