A Beach Clean-up
It was the school holidays. The Nature Society of my school (0) has planned a trip to the
beach. We (1) was going to clean up the beach as it was dirty and littered with rubbish. We left
school in a chartered bus at 7.30 a.m. Everyone was excited about the clean-up. They were in
high spirits. Within half an hour, we reached the beach. It was a sight for sore eyes (2) but every
part of the beach was littered with rubbish. The sun was already high in the sky and everybody
was beginning to (3) felt the heat. We could feel beads of perspiration trickling down our backs
and necks. Mr Ong, the teacher- in- charge, gave a short briefing and split (4) them into groups.
We then set off for the designated part of the beach we were assigned to. We were given
garbage bags and we started picking up the rubbish. By 12 noon, we had already collected ten
bags (5) filling with plastic bottles, aluminium cans, newspapers, cigarette butts, plastic bags…
the list seemed endless. (6) However there were rubbish bins placed around the area, people
still threw rubbish wherever (7) it liked. We finally completed the clean-up (8) on three o’clock in
the afternoon. Mr Ong thanked everyone for a job well done. We were very pleased with our
efforts. In a way, by cleaning up the beach, we had done our part to save the environment.
