JOB DESCRIPTION
Job title: Trust Doctor (ST1/2) Acute Medicine
Working pattern: Shift pattern including weekends and late evening shifts
Work base: University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust; Royal Stoke

Job Purpose
The post holder will gain a wide range of experience in all aspects of work within the Acute Medicine
Department. They will be expected to work as an SHO doctor covering all areas of the Department. There will
be a Consultant available for advice/supervision at all times. During this time the post holder will work across
all areas of the Acute Medicine Department.
The Post
You will be part of a large team of Foundation Year 1 doctors, SHO’s and middle grades as well as advanced
nurse practitioners (ANP’s). You will cover all 4 areas of our department on a rotational basis including the 46
bed Acute Medical Unit (AMU) which includes a 10 bed Higher Monitoring Area, the Ambulatory Emergency
Centre (AEC), the Short Stay Unit (SSU) and the Acute Medical Rapid Assessment Unit (AMRAU). This post
will provide excellent opportunities to enhance and develop clinical skills in acute and general medicine as well
as leadership and management skills.
There will be support given to gain and consolidate competencies in procedural competencies and in all
aspects of Acute and General Internal Medicine. Weekly departmental teaching sessions to achieve core
knowledge will be arranged. Study leave and funding for required courses e.g. ALS will be supported subject
to budget availability.
ABOUT THE ROLE ON OFFER
Career support: the post holder will be allocated a Mentor/Clinical supervisor from amongst the Consultant
body and there is a robust system of appraisal in place.
General Provision
You will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of
services and will share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management. Subject to
the conditions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, you are expected to observe the Trust’s agreed
policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the
standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust. In particular, where you manage employees of the
Trust, you will be expected to follow the local and national employment and personnel policies and
procedures. You will be expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff
involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.
All medical and dental staff employed by the Trust is expected to comply with the UHNM Trust’s Health and
Safety Policies.
You have agreed that you have responsibility for the work and supervision of junior medical staff who work
with you and you will devote time to this activity on a regular basis. If appropriate, you will be named in the
contracts of doctors in training grades as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as the
initial source of advice to such doctors on their careers.
Resources
1. To provide senior medical leadership in the Acute Medicine Department, with responsibility for the prevention,
diagnosis and treatment of all categories of patients and the proper functioning of the Department.
2. To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff to contact you in respect of patients under
your care.
Clinical Governance
3. In conjunction with consultant colleagues, to take part in medical audit and research as appropriate.
4. In conjunction with consultant colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
6. In conjunction with consultant colleagues, to play a full part in teaching, examination and accreditation duties, as
required and appropriate for junior medical staff.
8. To take responsibility for your own continuing professional education in accordance with guidelines set out by
the appropriate college/faculty/professional body.
Management
9. In conjunction with consultant colleagues, to assume such managerial or administrative duties within the
Directorate as necessary.
10. To observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures, in particular in relation to managing staff and to follow
the Trust’s Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions. These policies and procedures have been
drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters
All doctors will participate in audit and research within the department. They will be supervised in the
completion of individual projects by the appropriate Consultant. They will be encouraged to attend
departmental audit meetings.

Tenure
The appointment is a fixed term, whole time position which is fixed term from start date for 12 months. The
notice period is three months on either side. The appointment is subject to the provisions of Schedule 14 of
the Terms & Conditions.
Salary
The basic salary is as per the Trust Doctor Terms & Conditions of Service. The current basic pay nodal
points are as follows:
Travelling allowances are paid for official visits to peripheral hospitals. The possession of transport is
essential and the post carry recognition of “standard users“ status is subject to application.
Annual Leave
The annual leave entitlement for a full-time doctor is as follows, based on a standard working week of five
days:
a. On first appointment to the NHS: 27 days
b. After five years’ completed NHS service: 32 days.
Superannuation
This post is superannuable under the Health Service Superannuation Scheme.
Registration
You will be required to have full and specialist registration with a licence to practise with the GMC and to
provide a valid certificate annually.
Conditions of Employment
The following conditions must be met before the Trust will confirm an offer of employment:

Professional Registration
The successful candidate is required to be registered with the GMC with a licence to practise. Membership
of the approved Medical Defence/Protection Society is not a mandatory requirement for the post but is
strongly advisable.
