Crochet Pattern - Bear - Rag Doll: What You Need
Measurements:
About 15.5 inches (38-40cm) tall,
the head diameter is 4 inches
(10cm), made from 100% Acrylic
Worsted Weight yarn –
“Impeccable Loops & Threads”,
“Red Heart” and “Vanna’s Choice”
Gauge/tension:
17-18 sc sts in 2.5 inches (10cm) for Worsted Weight Yarn.
The gauge is not essential for this pattern; I give it for reference; the goal is to make stitches tight
enough, so the filling does not show through the stitches.
I recommend that you make a sample before starting the toy itself: you get to practice and find out your
gauge.
ABBREVIATIONS
Rnd(s) = round(s) yo = yarn over st(s) = stitch(es)
ch = chain stitch sl st = slip stitch sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet dc = double crochet
dec = stitch decrease inc = stitch increase dc2tog = crochet 2 dc sts togehter
MC = Main Colour yarn CC = Contrasting Colour yarn
Pattern explanation:
dec (sc dec) = decrease one single crochet stitch – insert the hook in the front loop of the next stitch,
do not yarn over, insert the hook in the front loop of the next stitch (3 loops on the hook), yarn over and
draw the yarn through the first 2 loops (2 loops on the hook), yarn over and draw through both loops on
the hook. Note: sometimes it looks better when you simply skip a stitch in order to decrease. When
appears without a number, dec stands for one stitch decrease; a number after this symbol indicates how
many times decrease has to be made.
inc (sc inc) = increase one single crochet stitch – crochet two single crochet stitches in one stitch of
previous row.
The number at the end of round is the number of stitches in the round (row).
Dc2tog – yarn over (YO) hook, insert hook in next stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook); YO hook,
pull through 2 loops; YO , insert the hook in next st, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), YO, pull through
2 loops (3 loops on hook); YO, pull through last 3 loops. One dc2tog made (see pictures).
For example,
sc 15 means: crochet single crochet stitch in each of the next 15 stitches of previous row (round);
{ sc 3, inc } x 6 (30) means: crochet one single crochet stitch in each of the next three stitches of
previous row, then increase one stitch by working two single crochet stitches in next (fourth) stitch;
repeat between { } 6 times around; the number of stitches in this round is 30.
inc x 6 means : crochet 2 single crochet stitches in each one of the next 6 stitches of the previous row.
Changing colour
To change to a “new” yarn : draw a loop with the “old” color, tie the “new” yarn to the “old” yarn; yarn
over with the “new” yarn and pull out a loop of the “new” yarn.
Shifting the end/beginning of rounds. In several rounds stitches are added after completing those
rounds, but there is no increase in the number of stitches, this is done to shift the end of the round, for
symmetry or convenience in the stitch count.
Following the description of work, there are pictures to help you with the tricky parts
Jumpsuit
Use bigger crochet hook – I used F/5 (4.25mm) hook
Rnd 1: Hold the toy upside down, attach CC yarn at first front loop of Rnd 32, ch2, sc in same front
loop, then crochet 2 sc sts in each front loop around, sl st in the second ch st at the beginning of this
round (72)
Rnds 2-3: ch2, dc st in same st of previous row, then dc st in each st to the end of round, sl st in the
first dc st of this round (72)
Rnd 4: ch2, dc st in same st and next 7 sts, 2 dc sts in the 9th st; then crochet dc sts around, making dc
increase in every 9th st; sl st in the first dc st of the round (80)
Rnds 5-9: ch2, dc st in same st, then dc st in each st to the end of rnd, sl st in the first st of the rnd (80)
Stop working on the jumpsuit for now.
To make Right leg, attach CC yarn at the middle front (the first of the skipped stitches of Rnd 9 ), ch2,
dc st in the same st of Rnd 9, then crochet dc sts around (39 sts in dc sts of Rnd 9 and 6 dc sts in the
unused loops of ch sts separating the legs), sl st in the first st of this round (46)
Repeat Rounds 11-20
Arms
Rnd 1: ch2, 6 sc sts into the second loop (6)
Rnd 2: inc x 6 (12)
Rnd 3: { sc1, inc } x 6 (18)
Rnd 4: { sc5, inc } x 3 (21)
Rnd 5-8: sc around (21)
Rnd 9: { sc5, dec } x 3 (18)
Rnd 10: dec x 3 , sc12 (15)
Rnds 11-12: sc around (15) stuff the arm
Rnd 13: sc8, dec, sc5 (14)
Rnds 14-17: sc around (14)
Rnd 18: sc9, dec, sc3 (13)
Rnds 19-21: sc around (13)
Rnd 22: sc9, dec, sc2 (12)
Rnd 23: sc around (12), leave the top half of the arm without stuffing; cut the yarn leaving
long end for sewing
Ears
Rnd 1: with MC, ch2, 6 sc sts into the second loop (6)
Rnd 2: inc x 6 (12)
Rnd 3: { sc1, inc } x 6 (18)
Rnd 4: { sc2, inc } x 6 (24)
Rnds 5-7: sc around (24)
Rnd 8: { sc2, dec } x 6 (18), cut yarn leaving long end for sewing
Tail
Rnd 1: with MC, ch2, 6 sc sts into the second loop (6)
Rnd 2: inc x 6 (12)
Rnd 3: { sc1, inc } x 6 (18)
Rnds 4-6: sc around (18)
Rnd 7: { sc1, dec } x 6 (12), cut yarn leaving long end for sewing; add some stuffing
Muzzle
The pictures below show the most difficult points of the crochet process.
To begin the head: Make the first loop from the short side of the string, ch2 and crochet 6 sc sts in the
first loop (which is second loop from the hook); after that continue to work in the round: crochet first st
of the second round in the first st of the first round
To begin the foot: ch5, starting from the second (from the hook) loop, crochet sc st in next 2 ch sts,
insert the hook leaving only one loop in front of the hook (left picture); turn clockwise and crochet on
the other side of the chain (middle picture); continue to crochet in the round, so the first st of Rnd 2 is
above the first st of Rnd 1 (picture on the right):
The first round of the jumpsuit and ruffle above it is made the same way: hold the toy upside down,
attach CC yarn at first front loop, ch1, sc st in same front loop:
sl st in the 1st st of this round; for the second round of the ruffle: ch4, skip next st of Rnd 1, sc in next st
Connecting rounds of the jumpsuit: sl st in the first dc st of same round ; ch2, dc st in the same stitch
(picture on the left); to begin Left leg, ch6 (picture on the right):
skip 40 sts of Rnd 9, sl st in the next st, ch2, dc st in the same st of Rnd 9:
To make dc2tog – yarn over (YO) hook, insert hook in next stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook);
YO hook, pull through 2 loops; YO , insert the hook in next st, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), YO,
pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook); YO, pull through last 3 loops
For the flower, ch4, connect into circle by sl st in the first ch st; ch3, sl st in the middle of the circle,
ch3, sl st in the middle… make 5 petals , cut the yarn, take it out of the loop, tie both ends together, use
them to tie the flower to the scarf
Sew on one part of the press stud on the other side of the flower, wrap the scarf around the neck to
determine the position for the other part of the press stud
