Field Practice 2
Field Practice 2
FIELD PRACTICE
As per definition of Dr. Licht, stroke mean acute deprivation of blood supply to the brain, thus affects virtually every human functions.
Depending on its type as in cases with profound coma, it may lead to death in a matter of hours or days. For others, after some days
and weeks, recovery may begin, but for most patients, it will be a slow and prolonged process. Many complications may arise.
Behavioral changes such as perceptual and cognitive deficits, personality and emotional disorders, psychomotor changes and mental
deterioration can be noted.
So once a person is affected with stroke, his functioning is affected. Social functioning is the totality or the result of the performance
of a person’s different social roles. For each role a person performs, there are expected behaviors and activities as well as
responsibilities and obligations. Thus, we can say that the average is able to come with the demands of each of the role she or he has
to assume in the society so his social functioning is adequate or satisfactory. However, this is not true for everybody. Factors in the
person herself (ex. Poor perception of reality, lack of skills, negative resources) or factors in himself caused problems in the
performance of roles. Having a stroke affects some of his role performance and others it may be all of his role performance.
Stroke also can be said to be illness since it deprives the family of its breadwinners as in most cases. It shuts of income usually for the
rest of his/her life. It saddles the family with expenses which will continue to mount when patient returns home who is unable to work
and often in need or requiring some assistance hence the earning members of the family has to remain at home as
attendant/caregiver. It affects both patient and family’s social functioning therefore, it is essential that assistance with psychosocial
problems and functioning be given the family as well as the patient to maintain its functioning and to promote rehabilitation.
It is this light that the group work program was created for them with the goal of enhancing or improving the person’s social
performance by engaging in any of its functions – restoration, provision of resources and prevention of more problems through group
work activities. The patient incapable of performing his role brought about by his illness is still a person undressed with worth and
dignity and hence, should be treated as such.
The group will be composed of 10 members (patients) who are outpatients, able to communicate verbally, ambulatory or with
ambulation device (with cane or wheelchair). This is a mixed group compose of male and female with ages 45 years old and above,
maybe single or married and willing to participate in the program.
The group will meet every week before the stroke clinic. The session will run for about 1 hour from 1pm to 2pm at the Rehab OPD
clinic in two months time.

BARANGAY BALETE
Balete is a low-income farming community in the province of Pampanga. It is accessible by any means of transport. It has 205 families
and a total population of 1,187. Thirty five percent of the population are within the age of 7 to 22 years old and while 47% are between
the ages 25 and 60. Fifteen percent of the population above six year old and below while the remaining 3% are more than 60 years of
age. Sixty two percent of the school age population are out of school. Of the population above twenty two years old 18% did not
finished grade school. 56% finished tertiary education. Most of the people live in makeshift homes and in marginal conditions. Seventy-
one percent of the population have family incomes below the food threshold. People earn just enough to pay their debts and meet
their subsistence food requirements. This is in spite of the fact their output is higher than the national average. The main source of
income of the family in this barangay is higher than the national average. The main source of income of the family in this barangay is
farming with rice and vegetables as the chief product. Most of the women supplement their income by raising livestock, usually hogs
and poultry.
The community’s main sources of water are deep wells. Only 53% of the families have water sealed toilet facilities. Many of the
children are malnourished and often suffer from illnesses such are diarrhea and respiratory tract infection. There is a high incidence
of infant mortality. To decrease the number of malnourished children, a religious group has been operating a supplemental feeding
for the last six months.

school and day care center in the community. The community problems identified by the people are as follows: low income, lack of

that the 26 members are now earning thrice as much as non-members. In fact a number of them have acquired the land rights of their
neighbors who borrowed money from them. When consulted by the mayor, he strongly advised the suspension of the plan to build
roads until it is determined that such a project would adversely affect the community. She give you an MBN form which, she said,
should be use in data gathering. But in their last community meeting, one of the traditional leaders told you predecessor that they did
not need her assistance. She resented this and called him a “trapo”.

them was the educational assistance your NGO was supposed to grant them, as promised by the previous CO worker. You have
identified potential leaders who are highly committed but lacks the competence. The most respected among them is Ka Lito who is
