Tian Ma Tu Chung Seven Leave Ginseng is a Chinese traditional medicine indicated
for treatment of inflammation and pain in the joints, back and muscles. It is also used for muscle relaxation, blood circulation invigoration and flatulence relief. This product is packaged in a bottle of 48 black round pills and distributed by Ving Hong Enterprise, of Perak, Malaysia. It was found unregistered after being reported with eight toxicity cases. Liver failure, Cushing’s syndrome with red round face (moon face) and weight gain with central obesity were the side effects associated with Seven Leaves Ginseng consumption.
Seven Leave Ginsengs have been found to contain dexamethasone, a corticosteroid
medicine controlled under the Poisons Act 1952 and chlorpheniramine, an over-the-counter antihistamine drug. According to Sales of Drug Act 1952, Seven Leave Ginseng violates Section 15(a) as it is mixed with dexamethasone and chlorpheniramine which diminish in any manner its beneficial properties as compared with such article in a pure and normal state and in an undeteriorated and sound condition or which in any other manner operates or may operate to the prejudice or disadvantage of the purchaser or consumer. This product also found to breach Section 15(d) as it contains substance which renders the drug injurious to health where the usage of such product results in severe adverse events. On top of that, possession and sales of this product is also considered offence under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984 as well, violating Regulation 7 (1A) (e) where the product is found to labelled with fake registration numbers. Pharmacist should educate the public to always refer to healthcare professionals before using any complementary medication such as herbal products. Next, pharmacists should also play their role in advising the consumers to always check on the registration number of the complementary product from the QUEST 3+ (Sistem Pendaftaran Produk dan Perlesenan) service provided by National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA). Besides, pharmacist should also investigate and report such adverse events resulting from consumption of herbal products to related authority, MADRAC so that further action could be taken.
