This study aimed to improve Vietnamese students' reading comprehension skills and attitudes using the K-W-L strategy. It used an experimental design with an experimental group that received K-W-L instruction and a control group that did not. The study found that K-W-L helped passive students improve reading skills by increasing self-confidence. Students showed interest in K-W-L and their attitudes toward reading class changed as a result.

Trying K-W-L Strategy on Teaching Reading Comprehension to Passive Students in Vietnam

Objectives

trying to change students from negative attitudes to positive feeling towards reading class after
the K-W-L method was used and to improve Vietnamese students’ reading skill as well as
catching the main idea in the reading texts in order to have successful communication in
English
Research Questions

1. Does KWL method help passive students improve their Reading comprehension skill?
2. What is the students' thinking of the KWL method?
3. Are there any changes in students' attitudes towards Reading class after the KWL method
is used?

Methodology

This research applied experimental design by using two groups namely; an experimental (a
group that received the treatment) and a control group (a group that did not receive the
treatment). This research also applied three variables namely; dependent variable (the
students who are taught by using KWL strategy), independent variable (KWL strategy), and
control variable (students’ interest with KWL strategy, in this case, it is eliminated in the
control group that was not given the treatment). In addition, this study also applied survey
research to find out if there any changes in students’ attitudes after KWL used.

Findings

1. KWL method helps passive students improve their reading comprehension skill since they
could show their self-confidence.
2. The students showed their interest in this strategy when they studied in reading class. As
the result of the students’ interest in using KWL strategy, their attitude towards reading
class had some changes.
