University of Dohuk/College of Engineering

Department of Civil Engineering 3rd year/ Highway Engineering mid term exam
Date:18/1/2010 time 1 hr 45 min

Q1/ a- Draw the following

1- Cut and fill composite cross section
2- Characteristics cross section of class A2 highway showing all dimensions
3- A profile showing the attainment of superelevation ( rotation @ the C.L)

b- The following are the cumulative volume data along a section of a highway project

station 0+00 0+50 1+00 1+50 2+00 2+50 3+00 3+50 4+00 4+50 5+00
Cumulative 10000 12500 14500 13500 10000 7000 6000 10000 12000 13000 14000
Volume cu.m
1-draw the project mass diagram
2-draw the ground surface profile

Q2/a –
The figure shows a two lane highway in a hilly area. A rock located at a distance of 3m
from the C.L of the inside lane is obstructing the sight distance. If the radius to the C.L
of the inside lane =40m, assuming a flat highway section, calculate the allowable speed on
this section of the highway. ( coef. of friction=0.3, perception- reaction time=2.5 sec)

b/ Prepare a setting out table to set out a spiral curve only every 20m using the following
data
Length of spiral =100m
Radius of the circular curve= 400m
Station P.I = 20+00 (station of the intersection point between the two tangents)
Deflection angle between the two tangents =40º
Q3 a-
A vertical sag curve passes under a bridge. The vertical clearance =4m, the length of the
Vertical curve= 200m, G1=-5%, G2= 5%, does adequate stopping sight distance exist on
the curve or the vertical clearance has to be increased.
f=0.3, V=90 km/hr ,h1 =1.8m, h2=0.5m ,perception- reaction time=2.5 sec

b-
The diagram shows a horizontal curves connecting two horizontal tangents
1- Annotate the diagram
2- If the highway width at point (A)= 7m find the highway width at point( B)
3- If the elevation at the edge (B)=10m find the elevation at the edge (C)
The design speed on the curve=40km/hr, radius of the curve=60m, fs =0.15,
design wheel base=6.1m
