B. Motivation

Class, before we proceed to our lesson, I

would like to share a short story to you
first.
(Teacher tells the story to the class) (Students listen…..)

So, what can you say about the story?

Yes Camille? It’s all about the theme of the good
being rewarded and the bad being
punished.
Very Good!

Now what do you think is our topic for (Students think)

today?

Is there anyone here who knows a story

related to that theme?
Yes Ailyn? Ma’am, the story of the Two Old
Women and the Crocodile.
Very Good!

C. Presentation

In this myth, the Two Old Women and the

Crocodile, the universal theme of the good
being rewarded and bad being punished is
clearly seen.

But before we start with the story, let us

define first what a myth is.

D. Discussion

Part 1

Now, can you give me the meaning of a

myth?
Anybody? Yes Maribel? A myth is a traditional story about
heroes or supernatural beings.
Very Good Maribel!

A myth is a traditional story about heroes

or supernatural beings, often attempting to
explain the origins of natural phenomena
and aspect of human behavior.

Now, moving on to the short story, a short

story is a brief of short work a fiction.
And what do you mean by fiction?

Yes Camille? Fiction is a literary work of imaginative

narration, either oral or written.
Very Good!

Fiction is a literary work of imaginative

narration, either oral or written.
It is also fashioned to entertain and to
make readers think, more so, to feel.

The first element in the CHARACTER:

And what is a Character?

Yes Juainy? A character is a person or sometimes
even animals, who take part in the
action of a short story or other literary
work.
Very Good!

Next is the SETTING:

Any idea of Setting?

Yes Julius? Ma’am, setting is the time and location
in which the story takes place.
Yes that’s right!

Setting is the time and location in which

the story takes place. This is where the
story happens. For some stories, setting is
very important while for others it is not.

The third element is a PLOT:

Any prior knowledge?

Yes Cristelle? Ma’am, a plot is a series of events and
character actions that relate to the
central conflict.
Very Good!
Plot -- It is how the author arranges events
to develop his basic ideas; It is a sequence
of events in a story or play. The plot is a
planned, logical series of events having a
beginning, middle and end. The short story
usually has one plot so it can be read in
one sitting. There are five (5) essential
parts of a plot:

a.) Introduction - The beginning of

the story where the characters and
the setting is revealed.

b.) Rising Action - This is where the

events in the story become
complicated and the conflict in the
story is revealed (events between
the introduction and climax).

c.) Climax - This is the highest point

of interest or turning point of the
story. The reader wonders what
will happen next; will the conflict
be resolved or not?

d.) Falling Action - The events and

complications begin to resolve
themselves. The reader knows what
has happened next and if the
conflict was resolved or not (events
between climax and denouement).

e.) Denouement - This is the final

outcome or untangling of events in
the story.

The second to the last element is

CONFLICT:

Any idea?
Yes Jonah? Ma’am, the conflict is the struggle
between two people or things in a short
story.
Very well said!

Conflict is the struggle between two

people or things in a short story. The main
character is usually on one side of the
central conflict.
On the other side, the main character may
struggle against another important
character, against the forces of nature,
against society, or even again against
something inside himself or herself
(feelings, emotion, illness).

And the last element is THEME:

How about it?

Yes Ailyn? Ma’am, the theme is the central idea or
belief in a short story.
Yes that’s right!

So, can you give me some examples of (Students give sample theme)
theme that you know?

Part 2

Narrating the story the Two Old Women

and the Crocodile
(While discussing the story, questions are
approaching )

Now, what do you think is the moral

lesson of the story?

Yes Leslie? Ma’am, you should always be good

with or without waiting for you.

Yes Julius? Ma’am, you shouldn’t be bad because

karma is very digital.
So can you give me your own
interpretation of the story’s theme?
Yes Lenard? Ma’am, you should be good and not
bad, simply because it is the right thing
to do.
Yes, that’s right!
Thank you.

E. Generalization

To sum up it all, a myth is a traditional

story, and a short story is a fiction or what
we call imaginative narration. We have 5
elements of a short story, the character,
setting, plot, conflict and theme. We also
have 5 parts of plot namely, introduction,
rising action, climax, falling action, and
denouement. And the story The Two Old
Women and the Crocodile explains to us
the meaning of the good rewarded and bad
being punished.

IV. Evaluation:
Define the five (5) elements of a short story.

V. Assignment:
Study your lesson.
