Pathways Design Overview

This document discusses design concepts for a mobile application called Pathways and Paws that allows dog walkers to visualize their walking routes and share community networks. It proposes visualizing routes as a map with data points noting distance, time, and elevation changes, and visualizing stops as nodes on the map with notes about the nature and duration of the stop. It also outlines an interface to show nearby dog walkers on a map through unique identifiers transmitted from wearable devices, and challenges in testing prototypes of the wearable devices and creating trusted networks between users.

Pathways and Paws(es) Design Concepts

1) Visualising place vs visualizing route

Routes: Screen capture of a dog walk using COTS app (Tractive Dog Walk)

Data collected:

Walk with Kit:

2.9 km, 1.2 h, 2.4km/h
︎54m, ︎41m,↕︎49m

Challenges:
No experiential data (nature of
pathways, meetings with others,
activity of animal companion etc.)
[NB can add notes]

Pauses: Mock up of Pathways visualization

Data collected:

A walk with companion animal.

Node 1 is a short ‘business stop’
and node 2 is a longer stop for a
chat.

Challenges: Experiential data which

includes temporal increments still
doesn’t show difference in quality
(e.g. waiting to cross a road vs
stopping to chat) – but does make it
available for reflection and
discussion

2) Visualising community

Interface mock up for walker community networks

Wearable transmits a unique

identifier (UID) - a dog
name and icon shown at a
particular location on the
map. Icons are selected by
the users and are ideally,
representative of the
approximate breed of dog.

Challenges: Creating
‘trusted’ networks in-situ
e.g. Potential PCEs are generated when two Bluetooth devices come into proximity. Walkers
are alerted by the mobile device and then have the option of adding each other to a personal
network.

Challenges: Robust casing for a dog wearable – switched on via lead attachment to collar –
geo-fencing to maintain personal data security (e.g. 50 metres after leaving home).
