INTRODUCTION OF THE CYCLE INDUSTRY

“Cycling for life

To play football or cricket u need a team
To swim you need a sea, river or a swimming pool
To ski you need a mountain and snow
But for the pleasant and easiest form of exercise
In the world
You only need a bike!”

Despite its being essentially a nineteenth century contraption,

devoid of sophistication of a modern car or aero plane, the bike is

likely to maintain its importance in 21st century. it is cheapest way

of traveling. The environmental danger posed by the petrol, the

increased need for exercising for improved health is our present

day stress ridden society and congestion on road are chiefly

responsible for its phenomenal popularity by cycling one can

became stronger and delay fatigue, by building up stamina.

Besides the cycle offers the cheapest mean of transport with

the added benefit of minimum cost operations and maintenance

thus with the turnaround in its range once again the bicycle which

began as, the glamorous vehicle of the elite in the 18th century

appears all the set of recapture its post glory by offering to serve

needs of both classes and masses.

BICYCLE- ORIGIN AND INVENTION

HISTORY OF BICYCLE

The Walking Machine

In 1817 Baron von Drais invented a walking

machine that would help him get around the

royal gardens faster: two same-size in-line

wheels, the front one steerable, mounted in a

frame which you straddled. The device was

propelled by pushing your feet against the ground, thus rolling

yourself and the device forward in a sort of gliding walk. The

machine became known as the Draisienne or hobby horse. It was

made entirely of wood. This enjoyed a short lived popularity as a

fad, not being practical for transportation in any other place than a

well maintained pathway such as in a park or garden.

The Velocipede or Boneshaker

The next appearance of a two-

wheeled riding machine was in 1865,

when pedals were applied directly to the

front wheel. This machine was known as

the velocipede ("fast foot"), but was

popularly known as the bone shaker, since it was also made entirely

of wood, then later with metal tires, and the combination of these

with the cobblestone roads of the day made for an extremely

uncomfortable ride. They also became a fad, and indoor riding

academies, similar to roller rinks, could be found in large cities.

The High Wheel Bicycle

In 1870 the first all metal machine

appeared. (Previous to this metallurgy was

not advanced enough to provide metal

which was strong enough to make small,

light parts out of.) The pedals were still

atttached directly to the front wheel with

no freewheeling mechanism. Solid rubber

tires and the long spokes of the large front wheel provided a much

smoother ride than its predecessor. The front wheels became larger
and larger as makers realized that the larger the wheel, the farther

you could travel with one rotation of the pedals. You would purchase

a wheel as large as your leg length would allow. This machine was

the first one to be called a bicycle ("two wheel"). These bicycles

enjoyed a great popularity among young men of means (they cost

an average worker six month's pay), with the hey-day being the

decade of the 1880s.

Because the rider sat so high

above the center of gravity, if the front

wheel was stopped by a stone or rut in

the road, or the sudden emergence of a

dog, the entire apparatus rotated

forward on its front axle, and the rider,

with his legs trapped under the handlebars, was dropped

unceremoniously on his head. Thus the term "taking a header"

came into being.

The High Wheel Tricycle

While the men were risking their

necks on the high wheels, ladies,

confined to their long skirts and corsets,

could take a spin around the park on an

adult tricycle. These machines also afforded more dignity to

gentlemen such as doctors and clergymen. Many mechanical

innovations now associated with the automobile were originally

invented for tricycles. Rack and pinion steering, the differential, and

band brakes, to name a few!

The Kid's Bike

Introduced just after the First World War by several

manufacturers, such as Mead, Sears Roebuck, and Montgomery

Ward, to revitalize the bike industry (Schwinn made its big splash

slightly later), these designs, now called "classic", featured

automobile and motorcyle elements to appeal to kids who,

presumably, would rather have a motor. If ever a bike needed a

motor, this was it. These bikes evolved into the most glamorous,

fabulous, ostentatious, heavy designs ever. It is unbelievable today

that 14-year-old kids could do the tricks that we did on these 65

pound machines! They were built into the middle '50s, by which

time they had taken on design elements of jet aircraft and even

rockets. By the '60s, they were becoming leaner and simpler.

The Current Scene

Pedaling History has on display even the recent history of the

bicycle in America that we are more familiar with: the "English 3-

speed" of the '50s through the '70s, the 10-speed derailleur bikes

which were popular in the '70s (the derailleur had been invented

before the turn of the century and had been in more-or-less

common use in Europe since), and of course the mountain bike of

right now. There are also many oddball designs that never quite

made it, including the Ingo (you have to see it to believe it!)

PRESENT POSITION OF INDIAN BICYCLE

INDUSTRY

Not many may know but India is the largest bicycle

manufacturer in the world after China. The industry, having an

annual turnover of over 1.2 million bicycles, is today all set to

expand itself to meet new challenges posed by global slowdown.

It has been observed that there is a broad spectrum of

bicycles from fitness to racing in demand. And, India can meet this

demand effectively.

The Indian bicycle manufacturing and bicycle spares industry

is widely recognized for its quality standards in international

markets.

One of the country's leading bicycle manufacturers and

exporters is Neelam cycle industries. Operating under the flagship

of M/S Seth Industrial Corporation, the ISO certified company came

into existence in 1964. The company specializes in manufacturing a

wide range of complete bicycles, spare parts and heavy Duty Kits

for Rickshaws. With new plants in the offing, Neelam Cycles is

optimistic about raising its existing turnover of 24 million USD to 30

million USD by the end of this year. "Our R and D (Research and

Development) is working day and night to develop new models. We

are installing new plants. Our new painting plant has started just

recently with the cost of 40-50 Lakhs. By such actions we hope to

increase the production by at least 25% from the previous year,"

said K.K.Seth, Director of the Neelam Cycle Industries.

The country's 1.2 billion dollars bicycle industry, which thrives

largely on domestic market, also exports eco-friendly bicycles to

Africa, Latin America and Gulf countries.Neelam Cycles too has

tested the international waters through direct and indirect exports.

ts export base lies in 32 countries. But with recession, higher steel

prices and stiff competition from China, the company is facing tough

times. And, this has led Neelam Cycles to look at innovative

strategies.

"Certainly it (recession) has affected. But we have expanded

over area. Even small towns of India also have Neelam cycle

dealership. We have expanded the global markets. Previously we

were confined to East Africa but now we also have West Africa as
our market. We have also added some countries of Asia like

Bangaldesh, Burma. So we are expanding the area to meet global

recession," said K. K. Seth. The company closely follows new market

trends, is fully conscious of the buyer's needs and is launching

many more reasonably priced and advanced models."We have a

good response from the market as we are not only the

manufacturers of standard bicycles. The segment has changed. We

serve bicycles that cater to different segments from a Child to an

elderly. Apart from that we have a good share in market. We have

70-80 per cent of the market for the rickshaw kit," said Satish

Talwar, the marketing head of the Neelam Cycle Industries.

Separate bicycle tracks are coming up in Indian cities and this

given hope of a revival of cycle culture in metros to the

manufacturers.

Though global recession has hit the bicycle exports too,

Neelam Cycles is of the opinion that there is huge domestic

potential, especially in Tier II and Tier III cities in the country.

Metros are basically regarded as Tier I cities, relatively smaller

cities are regarded as Tier II cities whereas smaller cities are

considered as Tier III ones

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

For the perfect thesis one has to know each and every aspect

of the concept thoroughly. So acquiring the data regarding this I

gone through by several things like:

• Books;

• Magazines;

• Journals; &

• Web site.

In order to understand the Performance and Prospects of DUKE

Apparels in Punjab as per the objective stated, the various steps

which are to be followed are given below:

a) Planning the research design.

b) Selecting the research method.

c) Selecting the sampling procedure.

d) Data collection.

e) Evaluating the data.

f) Preparing and presenting the research report.
RESEARCH DESIGN:

Research design essential because it facilitates the smooth

flow of various research processes. In order to get the appropriate

results on a clearly defined research topic, the design chosen by the

research is exploratory in nature. Exploratory studies: This research

is carried out to make the problem suited to more precise

investigation or to frame a working hypothesis from an operational

prospective. It is not used in case where definite result is desired as

in our research case where only impact is to be studied. This

research can be conducted using both qualitative and quantitative

technique.

As a part of exploratory studies the secondary data is being

collected since this topic is very highlighted in all over India and the

sector growth is also very rapid. On the basis of that in Ludhiana

context this research is an attempt to know the perception of

Ludhiana people and the apparel store retailers.

RESEARCH METHOD:

After developing an appropriate research plan, it is important

for the researcher to select a proper research method. For this

research, the research method chosen by the researcher are

secondary data and survey methods. Secondary data studies: This

is concerned with the analysis of already existing data that is

related to the research topic in question. Surveys: This is a research

technique, which is used to gather information from a sample of

respondents by employing a questionnaire. These surveys will be

conducted among them:

SAMPLING PROCEDURE:

Sampling is generally a part of the research design but is

considered separately in the research process. Sampling is a

process that uses a small number of items or a small portion of a

population to draw conclusion regarding the whole population. For

this research the sampling method chosen is simple random

sampling and Convenient

Sampling. Since in Ludhiana only few organized apparel

outlets is there so the unorganized retailers also are chosen for

interviews and customers are chosen at random.

SAMPLE SIZE: Sample size is around 50

Sampling Area: Ludhiana city

DATA COLLECTION: after preparing a suitable sample, the

researcher collects the data from the units in this sample. As stated

above that research method which will be used in the research

comprises of surveys therefore data collected will be of primary in

nature and partly secondary since secondary data will also be

taken.

EVALUATING AND ANALYSING THE DATA: This step includes

editing, coding, tabulation and processing of collected data. The

Schedules are required to be edited during the field survey for

necessary corrections. After the survey was complete they are

required to check again completeness, accuracy and uniformity. The

next step was coding. Different categories were identified into which

responses are classified. Then tabulation was done. Data was sorted

into different categories and numbers of cases that belong to those

categories were counted.

PREPARING AND PRESENTING THE RESEARCH REPORT:

After all analysis and evaluation is done the final report is presented

in a good manner which gives a proper detail about the study and

research done on the topic. There is proper detailed study of the

research in an easy form which anyone can understand.
