What Is Conflict in Creative Writing

Conflict is an incompatibility or struggle between characters or forces that creates tension and interest in a story. There are several basic categories of conflict: person vs self, person vs person, person vs society, and person vs nature. Conflict relates to plot structure by driving the rising action towards the climax. What is conflict in creative writing ?


Conflict
-In story telling conflict is an inherent incompatibility or struggle between the goals of
two or more characters or forces.

-creates tension and interest in a story.

- A narrative is not limited to a single conflict.

- Is a vital part of narrative it drives the story and maintains interest.

How does conflict relate to plot structure?


Exposition- background or introductory information about the setting, character and etc.

Rising action – are events that lead to the climax of the story.

Climax – the point of greatest interest drama, or tension in a story.

Falling action – the sequence of events that follow the climax and end in the resolution.

Denouement or Resolution - this consists of the events between the falling action and the
actual ending scene of the narrative and thus serves as the conclusion of the story.

Basic Categories Of Conflict


Person vs Self - this type of conflict involves a character who faces an inner struggle. This
character is typically the protagonist or main character of the story.

Person vs Person - this type of conflict occurs when the one character struggles with one
another character. There may be a psychological, emotional, verbal, or physical struggle.

Person vs Society - this type of conflict occurs when a character disagrees with societal values,
laws or beliefs.

Person vs Nature – this type of conflict occurs when a characters finds themselves pitted against
the forces of nature. Stories featuring this conflict often involve characters fighting for their
lives.

Person vs Machine or Al - where character intelligence, strength, or survival is pitted against a


machine (sentient or non- sentient)

Important questions
 What type of conflict do I want to employ in my story ?

 How can I use dialogue, action, description, or interior thought to develop and express
this conflict ?

 How is the conflict resolved ? When is the conflict resolved ? Or… is it never resolved?
Why not ?

 Is there a turning point or climax? Do any of the characters change in the story as a result
of the conflict?
