(1) What method of signaling with two flags, used at sea, called? (Clueless… Hmm I
guess, etymology was definitely an Abstract Science… but related this with Computers
and you get the Answers)
Ans: Semaphore (Semaphore, is the method using for Various Synchronization
Mechanisms, wherein any operations being performed on same resources are done in a
Simultaneous methodology to avoid any Clashes, etc)
(2) The HAL 9000 computer, the inimitable star of the classic Kubrick and Clarke film "2001: A Space
Odyssey," Was and is the computer of the FUTURE.
But what we don’t realize is that HAL was named due to a specific reason …. WHAT ???? (CLUE:
MENSA and the next Question)
(Before Answering this I would like to put a HUGE Foreword; if ever there was a Question which
had Two answers, like “Coffee or Toffee” or “Egg or the Chicken” then This Q would definitely be
ranked as the Foremost in Computer Trivia, Cause of the Following Answers)
Ans:
(a) In the standard English alphabet, the letters H, A, and L immediately precede the letters I, B, and M,
respectively
(b) IBM is the technology giant in question, a company often mistakenly credited as the basis for
the HAL 9000's three-letter name. In the standard English alphabet, the letters H, A, and L
immediately precede the letters I, B, and M, respectively.
The coincidence is so striking that many have often assumed that the HAL initials are a veiled
reference to Big Blue. The fact that a number of fake IBM products appear in the film—including
several monitors and a spacesuit control—only served to reinforce this assumption.
In actuality, HAL's real-world creator, Arthur C. Clarke, and his instructor in the novel, Dr.
Chandra, both profess that the HAL name is shorthand for heuristic algorithm, purportedly the
mathematical principle that serves as the basis for HAL 9000's artificial intelligence. Clarke has
also gone on record to say that, had he noticed the IBM-HAL connection before the release of the
film or novel, he would have named the computer something else.
If there's any actual connection between HAL and IBM that's intentional, it's perhaps the one most
cleverly obscured. As embattled astronaut Dave Bowman slowly disconnects the HAL 9000's
processors, the computer noticeably regresses in intelligence, ultimately clinging to one of its first
"lessons" in human interaction—a song.
That song, "A Bicycle Built for Two," was actually the first song "sung" by any computer—a feat
accomplished at Bell Laboratories in 1961 by an IBM 7094 computer. The touch is a subtle nod to
computer history, if not IBM itself.
And just to hammer home the point, when Clarke penned the sequel to 2001 in 1982, 2010:
Odyssey Two, he didn't name HAL's twin the HAL 9001 or the HAL 9000-B but instead chose SAL
9000. Whether that will put the HAL-IBM issue to rest is a matter of debate—and of great Geek
Trivia.
p.s: To all of those who Saw right through the GOOGLY.. Amazing… Actually I had placed this
Question, cause myself and my Colleague were having major Trouble Finding out which one
could be Right, cause Clarke’s Books have often contain innuendoes to Some Historical events
or Current Affairs.

(5) The phrase was originated by John Seybold and popularized at Xerox PARC during the late 1970s
when the first WYSIWYG______ editor, Bravo was created on the Alto. The Alto monitor (72 pixels per
inch) was designed so that one full page of text could be seen and then printed on the first laser printers.
When the text was laid out on the screen 72 PPI font metric files were used, but when printed 300 PPI files
were used -- thus one would occasionally find characters and words slightly off, a problem that continues to
this day. (72 PPI came from the standard of 72 "points" per inch used in the commercial printing industry.)
Seybold and the researchers at PARC were simply re-appropriating a popular catchphrase of the time
originated by "Geraldine", a character on The Flip Wilson Show, (1970-1974). What phrase did Seybold

1)
So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt,
laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. And a very great multitude spread their clothes
on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the
multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:
"Hosanna to the Son of David!
"Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!'
Hosanna in the highest!"
2)
Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the
high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him. But they
said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people."
Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, "What are you
willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?" And they counted out to him ________ pieces of silver.
So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.
3)
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and
said, "Take, eat; this is My body."
Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. For
this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say
to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with
you in My Father's kingdom."
4)
Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, "You also were
with Jesus of Galilee."
But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you are saying."
And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were
there, "This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth."
But again he denied with an oath, "I do not know the Man!"
And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, "Surely you also are one of them,
for your speech betrays you."
Then he began to curse and swear, saying, "I do not know the Man!"
5)
Then Jesus came with them to a place called ___________, and said to the disciples, "Sit here
while I go and pray over there." And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and
He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly
sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me."
He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let
this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will."
Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "What! Could you not
watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is
willing, but the flesh is weak."
Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass
away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done." And He came and found them asleep again, for
their eyes were heavy
6)
And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the
scribes and the elders were assembled
Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the COUNCIL sought false testimony against Jesus to
put Him to death, but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found
none. But at last two false witnesses came forward and said, "This fellow said, "I am able to
destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days."'
Well, the beginning of Jesus' trial. How do we better know the COUNCIL as?
ANS: SANHEDRIN
7)
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison
around Him. And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. When they had twisted a
crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee
before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" Then they spat on Him, and took
the reed and struck Him on the head. And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off
Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away.
Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear
His cross. And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull,
they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not
drink.
8)
Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the
ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God,
My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, "This Man is calling for Elijah!"
Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and
offered it to Him to drink.
The rest said, "Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him."
9)

Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with
them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. But they found the stone
rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it
happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in
shining garments. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to
them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! Remember how
He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, "The Son of Man must be delivered into the
hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again."'
ANS : Maybe this question was a bit vauge because its just an "Explain"
I understand that some junta were confused as to what I wanted to be
explained, but I did not know how to phrase the question in any other
manner without giving the answer away. Anyway, all I wanted to
hear was that Pandu died, because of a curse a deer gave him that
since Pandu had killed the deer when it was having fun with its
mate, he would also die when he approaches his wife with desire.
I've been very liberal with this question.
ANS : Jayadratha. The reason for this desperate attempt to save him is
pretty easy. Arjuna vows to kill Jayadratha before sundown
the day after he blocks the other pandavas from entering the
Shakatavyuha and hence, causes the death of Abhimanyu.
If the Kauravas had managed to protect Jayadratha, Arjuna would have
consigned himself to flames as per his vow. Arjuna, learning
Jayadrata's father's boon, uses several arrows to propel
Jayadratha's head into a nearby forest where Jayadratha's father was
doing penance and makes it fall onto his father's lap - and when he
(Jayadratha's father) gets up after finishing his penance,
Jayadratha's head falls to the ground and as a consequence of his own
boon, his head splits into several fragments.

to be unworthy of a Kshatriya, and was so livid that he charged at
Bheema with his own personal weapon, Y. Which act of Bheema made X so
angry, and why ? Also name his personal weapon Y.
ANS : X = Balarama
Y = His personal weapon = Plough.
The act that made Balarama so angry was Bheema hitting Duryodhana on
his thigh - to fulfill his vow. It is against the rules to hit below
the navel in a fair mace fight.

1. Although he was asthmatic, Argentinian-born X took up cigar smoking as one of his first
Cuban customs. While serving as Fidel Castro's right-hand man during the Cuban revolution,
he allowed himself two indulgences: books and cigars. But good tobacco was scarce in the
mountains of Cuba, so any cigars they got were highly prized. After taking his share, he
used cigars as incentives for his soldiers because, as he wrote, "a smoke in times of rest
is a great companion to the solitary soldier." who is X?
### CHE GUEVARA
2. This author smoked at least 22 cigars a day, maybe as many as 40. He supposedly once
declared, "If smoking is not allowed in heaven, I shall not go." His penchant for cigars
didn't necessarily mean he smoked the best cigars. He knew that even his closest
acquaintances were reviled by his stogie selections. Once, as he would later relate in his
essay "Concerning Tobacco," he pilfered a handful of costly and elegant cigars from a
friend's house, removed the labels, and placed the smokes in a box identified by his
favorite brand. He then invited the man and 11 other friends over for dinner, offering each
a cigar afterward. Everyone shortly excused themselves, and the next morning he found the
cigars sprawled outside--except for the one left on the plate of the man from whom the
cigars had been filched. "He told me afterward that some day I would get shot for giving
people that kind of cigars to smoke". Name the Author.
### MARK TWAIN
3. Throughout his long life, _______ nourished England with his battlefield bravery,
political courage and prolific writing, and nourished himself with the best food, drink and
cigars he could find. The man for whom the imposing ______ cigar size is named smoked eight
to 10 cigars a day, primarily Cuban brands. Not even the necessity of wearing an oxygen mask
for a high-altitude flight in a nonpressurized cabin could prevent ________ from smoking. As
the story goes, the prime minister requested that a special mask be created that would allow
him to smoke while airborne. Naturally, the request was fulfilled. On another occasion,
______ hosted a luncheon for King Ibn Sa'ud of Saudi Arabia, who did not allow smoking or
drinking in his presence. Rather than submit to the king's wishes, ______ pointed out that
"my rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also the
drinking of alcohol before, after and if need be during all meals and in the intervals
between them." The king was convinced. Name _________.
### WINSTON CHURCHILL
4. When you're the president of the United States, you can get just about anything you'd
like. What the 35th president wanted in early 1962 was a bunch of Cuban cigars, 1,000 Petit
Upmanns to be exact. He gave his press secretary, Pierre Salinger, less than 24 hours to
round them up. Short notice for such a big request, but then XXX had a pressing reason for
procuring the stash in such a timely fashion. He was about to sign an embargo prohibiting
any Cuban products from entering the country, including his beloved cigars. The embargo was
born of a nasty spat that the United States was having with Cuba and its fears that Fidel
Castro represented a growing threat to America's security. But before XXX could act, he
needed Salinger to complete his assignment. The press secretary didn't let him down, as he
managed to scrounge up 1,200 cigars. XXX then signed the embargo, and Cuban tobacco has
been
off-limits to Americans ever since. Who is XXX?

snuff out his cigar? As former teammate John Salley once put it: "We were just apostles. Jesus
was smoking, that's all there is to it. What are you going to say?" Who's this NBA legend.

"A woman is a woman but a good cigar is a smoke." Who is he?
### RUDYARD KIPLING
7. The legendary business tycoon and robber baron was a painfully shy and private person.
But in his professional dealings he was ruthless. During his long career as head of Co. by

8. The actor who first came on the public's radar screen as Vinnie Barberino in TV's
"Welcome Back, Kotter" and then skyrocketed to star stature as the disco-dancing Tony Manero
in Saturday Night Fever has a long-standing affection for cigars. Some of his fondest
memories are of his father smoking White Owls during his childhood in New Jersey. As a film
star, he can afford to reward himself with less pedestrian smokes: Davidoffs, Dunhills and
Montecristos are his favorites. Name the actor.
### JOHN TRAVOLTA
9. The perceived connection between cigars and wealth was one that this actor-director used
to great effect in his films. Having survived a poverty-stricken childhood, his sympathies
were always with the underdog, famously symbolized in his character, the Tramp. Although the
Tramp was not above picking up the cast-off cigar butts of the rich, in City Lights he used
a big cigar both as a symbol of the upper class, with its wealth and power, and as a spear
to harpoon it. Name the actor-director.
### CHARLIE CHAPLIN
10. Until he gave up the habit in 1985, the man who has ruled Cuba with an iron fist for 40
years was synonymous with cigars. Only a rising national concern over the health risks of
smoking would lead to his unequivocal decision to stop smoking cigars, even in private, to
set an example for his people. Just because he abandoned a pastime that he had relished for
44 years doesn't mean he doesn't still think about cigars. He would occasionally dream that
he was smoking a cigar, though he would admonish himself for doing so. "Even in my dreams I
used to think that I was doing something wrong," he said in a 1994 Cigar Aficionado
interview. "I was conscious that I had not permitted myself to smoke anymore, but I was
still enjoying it in my sleep." Years earlier, when he and the rebels were plotting how to
topple the Batista regime, the only time he did without cigars was when he ran out of them.
Anticipating those infrequent occasions, he would hoard his last smoke, lighting it only to
celebrate a victory or console himself over a setback. Who is he?

as Oscar winner for best supporting actress, though actually there was another name on his note.
And mistake was considered too embarrassing to correct.
Name both Oscar winners mentioned above. (and think, should we really value Oscar as much as
we do ?)
[Vivek, Beatrice got Oscar for 1976, whereas Fonda got it for 1981, so ...
Dinesh, When Henry Fonda finally won Oscar, his daughter Jane Fonda already was 2 times
Oscar winner, so didn't need his favour.]
8. This arguably the most influential movie ever was a fictional parody of an erstwhile media
mogul, who when come to know of this offered studio $800000 to destroy negative and all prints,
which studio refused. Annoyed mogul banned every newspaper and and station in his media
empire from even mentioning the movie.
That damaged film's success and it was virtually forgotten until the death of media mogul.
Such effective that mogul was that boos were heard almost every time this movie was reffered
during Oscar's ceremony that year,
and despite 9 nominations it won only one Oscar.
But ever since mogul's death this movie has won "the best movie ever" title in umpteen rankings
and surveys,
and is the best example of adage "Oscar isn't everything".
Name the movie, the media moghul the movie was based upon and great actor-director of the
movie.
Ans : Citizen Kane acted-directed by Orson Welles. Media mogul was William Randolph Hearst.
Great show.
thanks,
Niket.
