Worksheet 1.1 Circles

The document is a worksheet on conic sections that focuses on circles. It contains problems involving determining the standard form of circle equations, finding the center and radius of circles from equations, identifying if equations represent circles, points or empty sets, and solving other problems related to circles. Students are instructed to show their work and are given hints on approaching problems if they get stuck.

WORKSHEET 1.1
Conic Sections: Circles

General Directions: Read the instructions carefully. Do what is required of you. Use another sheet of paper whenever necessary.
Show your complete solutions. As much as possible, avoid erasures that would make your solutions untidy and would have you lose a
point. Remember, this is part of your summative assessment. If at first, you cannot get the answer, don’t give up. Take some time to
rest. Eat pizza. Drink some coffee. Sleep. Read books. Consult any reference book or your notes. If you need to ask or teach your
classmate about the process, you may do so. However, do not give nor copy the answer. You’ll not learn by just copying. Avoid
procrastination. Deadline of submission is next meeting.

A. Draw a 😊 if the given equation is in standard form; a ☹ if it is written in general form; and an asterisk
(*) if the equation is neither in standard form nor in general form.
_____1. (𝑥 − 1)2 + (𝑦 − 2)2 = 20 _____6. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 144 = 0
_____2. (𝑦 − 0)2 + (𝑥 − 0)2 = 49 _____7. 3𝑥 2 + 3𝑦 2 − 120 = 0
_____3. (𝑥 − 4)2 + (𝑦 + 5)2 − 31 = 0 _____8. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 169
_____4. (𝑥 + 3)2 + (𝑦 + 1)2 = 10 _____9. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 8𝑥 − 14𝑦 + 1 = 0
_____5. (𝑥 − ℎ)2 + (𝑦 + 𝑘)2 = 25 ____10. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 8𝑥 − 14𝑦 = 0

B. Determine the center and radius of the following circles.

EQUATION CENTER RADIUS
11. (𝑥 − 0)2 + (𝑦 − 0)2 = 49
12. 4(𝑥 + 3)2 + 4(𝑦 − 0)2 = 16
13. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 144 = 0
14. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 6𝑥 + 4𝑦 − 32 = 0
15. 3𝑥 2 + 3𝑦 2 − 6𝑥 + 9𝑦 − 14 = 0

C. Determine whether the following equation represents a CIRCLE, a POINT or an EMPTY SET. Write C
for circle, P for point and E for empty set on the space provided before each number.
____16. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 10𝑥 + 8𝑦 + 40 = 0 ____21. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 4𝑥 − 6𝑦 + 10 = −4
____17. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 10𝑥 + 8𝑦 − 40 = 0 ____22. 2𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 2 + 3𝑥 − 2𝑦 − 43 = 0
____18. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 10𝑥 + 8𝑦 + 42 = 0 ____23. 2𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 2 + 3𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 43 = 0
____19. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 4𝑥 − 6𝑦 + 9 = 4 ____24. 2𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 2 + 8𝑥 − 12𝑦 − 26 = 0
____20. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 4𝑥 − 6𝑦 + 9 = −4 ____25. 2𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 2 + 8𝑥 − 12𝑦 − 27 = 0

D. Solve the following problems.

26. Write the standard form of an equation of a circle with center at (-5, -12) and passes through (3, -1).
27. Write the general form of an equation of a circle with center at (5, -8) and has a diameter of 6√13 units.

28. A circular garden has a diameter of 60 feet and a path walk around the garden that has a width of five feet.
Find the general form of the equation of the two circles formed.

29. Located in Fort Bonifacio, Metro Manila, the Manila American Cemetery has the largest number of graves
for US personnel who were killed during World War II. Its structure is circular and has a land area of about
650, 000 square meters. Suppose that a tree was planted exactly at the center of the cemetery, serving as the
landmark for the center. Assuming that the gate is located 283 m west and 356 m north of the tree, is the gate
on the circular structure of the cemetery?

30. The equation 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 4000 represents the circle formed by the inner lane of a circular running track
where all measurements are expressed in foot measure. If an athlete needs to run around the track’s middle lane
thrice, then approximately how many feet does he cover?
