According to reports the employability of graduates in teaching sector is about 15%. With 85%
unemployable graduates in teaching sector, it calls for timely intervention in India's higher education
system towards producing more employable teaching graduates.
Last year we conducted many studies, on our students to find out reasons for unemployability. Many
known organisations have been working in this area and have found common reasons to this issue.
These findings are publicly available. At entry level a teaching graduate is expected to posses certain
skills such as communication, ability to speak English, work as a team, and basic computer
knowledge, but these are mostly lacking today.
Supported by these findings, we at IITE have decided to train the students in soft skills like
It has been more than a year now that we are training the students in soft skills and the feedback is
extremely encouraging. Parents and students have expressed happiness and satisfaction on the
outcome of these courses. A survey conducted on the students who are being trained in soft skills has
concluded that the students are showing signs of improvement. They are more confident, disciplined,
speak fluent English, are learning faster through the exposure and are better presenters in the
classroom.
Project based learning makes the learning fun and interesting
After intense discussions it was decided that the teaching methods need to be changed.
Classroom teaching will be aided by Project based learning method and Active learning
method.
Our aim is to nurture young minds to become open minded, well- read and well travelled
teachers. It was felt that if the students are exposed to best institutes located in Gujarat they
would learn the best practices, the world class working methods and the history of the
institutes, which ultimately would help them improve the productivity of the place they would
be working as a teacher.
Also potential teacher needs to be well informed about Gujarat. Studying about the heritage,
architecture, history, civilization, tourism and entrepreneurship of Gujarat will be extremely
helpful as a teacher. Therefore we have made these concepts part of the curriculum in the
form of PBL. In every semester students are taken out to the following field work.
Visit to a world class institute
Visit to a heritage site
Visit to a historical site which is also a tourist attraction
Visiting adopted villages to conduct research -helpful to the society
Visiting a centre of disability
As soon as the PBL experiment started there was great excitement on the campus. The first
PBL of visiting world class institutes like CEPT, NID, IIMA and learning best practices from
them brought wonders. The students were comparing themselves and IITE with the world
renowned institutes. The process brought in the desired push.
The legacy and greatness of CEPT, NID and IIMA, brought in magical changes among the
students of IITE. The impact was that if "They can be so, Why not we?" The PBL experience
has been warmly welcomed by the students and the teachers. The multidisciplinary,
multidimensional process of learning is a treat to watch.
Bringing out creativity
Initiating Innovation Cell has shown the creative side of the students. It has brought many
interesting findings. Setting a Start-up cell to promote entrepreneurship among the students,
saw a lot of brilliant ideas being generated. The best startups have been promised appropriate
support and financial help.
At IITE we offered horse riding, judo - karate as add on crash courses. The first course saw
very good response with 111 students taking up horse riding and 150 students taking judo-
karate course. We plan to offer Rifle shooting and Trail running this year.
Keeping in mind the emotional quotient, we brought in the concept of mentorship, assigning
teachers the Mentorship Role. The idea is that the teachers would groom the students so as to
overcome their problems. Also IITE has requested a certified psychologist and a renowned
Doctor from Ahmedabad to join the Institute. Their presence has helped the students
overcome their shortcomings in life.
Future dreams
1. A course and Centre of Excellence in learning disability
We plan to set up a "Centre of excellence in learning disability" by the end of the year 2017. It
being a huge project, will need volunteers, experts, trained teachers and a supportive culture
where the special ones have faith and feeling of being at home. To create a natural liking and
culture we have collaborated with the NGO's working in and around Gandhinagar in this area
and introduced the subject as compulsory PBL. The strategy is that this process will bring the
stake holders on a common platform, making it easier to handle the project. IITE has been in
touch with the Indian schools of Nepal, Bhutan, Singapore and Dubai, discussing with the
officials to absorb our students as teachers in these countries. The response is promising.
These are a few steps taken to bring the learning, teaching and curriculum at par with global
standards which we will continue till the goal is achieved. The process of reforms will continue.

The concept of international job fair originated from a video of PM Narendra Modi, in which he
talks about his dream of, India exporting teachers. The video inspired us to innovate. We used
google search engine to identify “ Indian schools in Gulf countries”. As several schools
emerged, the university team developed a rapport with them.
The most challenging part of the whole exercise was grooming the students. After very careful
selection of the students who can deliver, a training programme was developed, to specially
train the students for off shore teaching assignments. For six months they were trained by
experts in communication, technology, psychology, teaching, learning, pedagogy, content etc.
The credit goes to the excellent team work. IITE has a very powerful team at
the campus. Every team member is assigned a task according to his / her
expertise . In the International placement on one hand Dean Kalpesh Pathak
and UDO Vitthal Patel were sent for talks, skill teachers Chitralekha and Hiral
took charge of grooming of the students.
On 27th June representatives of more than 13 schools from Gulf turned up to interview about
23 (BScBEd and BABEd) candidates. By the end of the day 10 students were selected by
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Middle East for its school in Kuwait. With a free twin sharing
residential accommodation, two months vacation per year and sponsored air ticket to home,
for a fresh graduate it seemed to be a dream beginning. As the students and their parents
prepare for their dream departure it is a big moment for IITE.
While BVB Middle East contingent came in advance and completed the recruitment process,
the other schools shortlisted candidates and the process of further selection will continue.
At a time when education colleges, particularly the self financing ones, are marred by
irregularities and malpractices, the decision to set up an IITE i.e. teachers university was a
visionary step of the then CM Narendrabhai Modi.

Project-Based Learning
Project -based learning, is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore the real
world problems and challenges, simultaneously developing cross-curriculum skills while
working in small collaborative groups.
Because project-based learning is filled with active and engaging learning, it inspires students
to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying. Research also indicates that
students are more likely to retain the knowledge gained through this approach far more
readily than through traditional text book-centered learning. In addition, students develop
confidence and self-direction as they move through both team-based and independent work.
In the process of completing their projects, students also hone organizational and research
skills, develop better communication with their peers and adults, and often work within their
community while seeing the positive effect of their work.
Because students are evaluated on the basis of their projects, rather than on the
comparatively narrow rubrics defined by examinations; essays, and written reports,
assessment of project-based work is often more meaningful to them. They quickly see how
academic work can connect to real-life issues -- and may even be inspired to pursue a career
or engage in activism that relates to the project they developed.
Students also thrive on the greater flexibility of project learning. In addition to participating in
traditional assessment, they might be evaluated on presentations made to a community audience
they have assiduously prepared for, informative tours of a local historical site based on their
recently acquired expertise, or screening of a scripted film they have meticulously produced.
Project learning is also an effective way to integrate technology into the curriculum. A typical
project can easily accommodate computers and the Internet, as well as interactive
whiteboards, Global-Positioning-System (GPS) devices, digital still cameras, video cameras,
and associated editing equipment.
Adopting a project-learning approach in your classroom or school can invigorate your learning
environment, energizing the curriculum with real-world relevance and sparking student's
desire to explore, investigate, and understand their world.

Teaching Methodologies
Faculty Development Programme (FDP) in ICT
IITE has been organising FDP's in different topics.
The idea behind IITE is to produce a complete teacher with national as well as global
perspectives, who is powerful in content, pedagogy, skills, is trained and exposed to
surroundings, and is aware of the culture and heritage of the state. This leads to the idea that
students must learn not only through the classroom teaching but through other methods too.
1. Lecture by teacher
2. Class discussion conducted by teacher
3. Oral question and answer sessions between
teacher and students
4. Use of whiteboard by teacher
5. Teaching through surveys
6. Using case studies reported in literature
7. Debates in the classroom
8. Use of technology in the class rooms
9. Project Based Learning
Academic grooming
Teachers are the best Mentors
Teachers from IITE have been attached to groups of students as mentors. The groups will
exchange ideas and issues, with the mentor who will try to solve the problems of these
students. If needed the issues can be brought to notice of higher authorities.
The Counsellor
It is found that many students do experience academic difficulties or
challenging life circumstances. A licensed psychologist, Ms. Yesha Vyas has
joined the university. The counsellor often serves as the “first line of defence”
when a student encounters personal difficulties, and helps them with many
therapeutic and social services. College counsellors assist impoverished
students and those with learning disabilities. They detect and report abuse, or
help a student suffering from mental illness.
Medical officer
A renowned doctor of Ahmedabad Dr. Akhil Mukim has joined IITE as Medical
officer. An expert in health care Dr. Mukim meets students and employees
regularly. He helps the university organise quizzes , talks on health issues etc
A renowned homeopath
Dr. Ketan Shah has joined IITE in the alternate therapy segment
These are some of the steps we have taken to bring our curriculum, teaching, and learning
process at par with global standards of teacher education. We would continue with the process
of reforms and developments, till our goal of being world class institute is achieved.
