Business Statistics
Semester III
(Batch 2018-23)
By
Dr. Megha Chauhan

1. INTRODUCTION
The emergence of Business Statistics as a distinct approach dates to the 1960s. It was
the convergence of at least three trends which prompted historians to turn to
numeric data and statistical analysis for help in answering questions and framing
interpretations. In global work culture statistical skills are necessary for succeeding
in today’s increasingly competitive and demanding world. With the help of these
skills, one can analyze, interpret and make intelligent decisions. A large number of
these techniques and tools are applied to solve day to day business problems in many
areas.
The Course will provide learners with a thorough understanding of recent empirical
methods and its applications. Almost all the courses have statistics as a compulsory
subject. The students are not required to get into the origin of any formula but are
expected to apply these techniques to solve the problem. Moreover, familiarity with
the subject will help them understand the relevance of statistics in the field of
research which will help them in upcoming semesters. After completing this course, a
student should be able to:
A. Knowledge
Learners will learn and understand the value of statistical tools in research and
operational problem solving. Learners will be able to recognize and apply techniques
and their applications in problem solving for decision making. Students will be
introduced business problem situations and Apply/Analyze/Evaluate the results
using Critical Thinking. Learners will be able to demonstrate the problem solving
dimension as referenced above.
2
B. Skills
The Learner shall be taught the skills for developing strong research work. He can
learn about the practical considerations and apply techniques, based on various
recent cases where statistical tools have been applied. The subject also demands him
to interpret and critically evaluate the empirical results from different
approaches. The undergraduate level business statistics develop a good common
sense of the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches/methods. The
course enables the learner to acquire a thorough understanding of the data
requirements for applying various techniques. Describe the major features of data
sets and identifying their distributional properties; test hypotheses and draw
inferences; identify the cause/outcome of relationships between two variables; apply
linear regression techniques and interpret the results, and apply basic statistical
methods in solving problems.
C. Outcomes
By the end of the course the learner should have gained a knowledge and
understanding of the issues within the study of business statistics. The learner should
be able to think critically and independently about what they have seen and read. The
Learner is provided an exposure and is introduced to the range of skills develop and
employ the basic statistical concepts and descriptive analysis of data; understand the
concepts of random variables and probability distributions of financial data; draw
inferences and conclusions from statistical analysis; select appropriate estimation
technique; understand linear regression model and apply it to financial and
economic data; evaluate empirical research in finance, and use of event study
techniques in assessing financial developments. The learner can gain a critical
understanding of the application of the methods involved in the study.

3. LECTURES
Three lecture times have been set aside for this course for each division. Verify it
from the timetable assigned for each division. Lecture outlines, principally in the
form of PowerPoint slides, and relevant study/reading material will be made
available in “The Library‟ on “Curiosity‟ Portal at www.curiosity.symlaw.edu.in.
To facilitate your understanding of these lectures, you should always read at least
the relevant pages of suggested readings in advance of each lecture.
The student will not be eligible to appear for the examination if he / she fail to put
in the required attendance. The Students can update themselves of their
attendance daily online in “Attendance‟ on “Curiosity‟ Portal at
https://slsnoida.curiositylive.com.
You are notified that two online sessions with the help of „Banyan
Tree @Curiosity‟ will be conducted for Tutorial. We will be expecting
your response/ answer/ reply within stipulated time given. Those,
who will respond / answer / reply within stipulated time given, will be
granted attendance for one lecture each. This activity is compulsory
for all and attendance so granted will form part of the total
attendance.

assessment format. Internal examination will be conducted for 40 marks, which
includes one project (10 marks) one tutorial (20 marks) and viva voce (10 Marks).
First Component is Research Project –where each learner will be required to review
the allotted project to be evaluated out of 10 marks. The Project Topic will be allotted
by Course In charge in consonance with the Learners on or before July 3, 2019.
The Research project is aimed at improving research and analytical skills to make
students learning academically more challenging and rigorous than standard lecture
and test format courses
