Global Degradation and Poverty: An interrelation

Denielle V. Borbon

Global degradation mainly refers to the deterioration of the environment through depletion and
abusement of the environment’s resource. Environmental degradation takes diverse forms,
ranging from pollution and deforestation to degraded fresh water and destruction of the
ecosystem. It occurs due to crimes committed by humans against nature. Individuals are
disposing of wastes that pollute the environment at rates exceeding the wastes’ rate of
decomposition or dissipation and are overusing the renewable resources such as agricultural soils,
forest trees, ocean fisheries, etc. at rates exceeding their natural abilities to renew themselves.
Therefore, the environment's capacity to withstand the negative impacts due to human activities
has diminished and environmental degradation has become a threatening issue. Over the past
decades, environmental problems have been an extensive war for man and have moved rapidly in
becoming one of the most observed global problems.

According to the Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and

Ecosystem Services (IPBES), 75% of Earth’s land areas are being degraded. And approximately
3.2 billion people are being threatened, especially those who are situated in poverty. More often
than not, many international reports claim that poverty contributes to environmental degradation.
Due to the scarcity of resources and knowledge, poverty-stricken people tend to overuse every
resource available to them when their survival is at stake. Poverty also causes people to: put
more pressure on the environment , practice improper waste disposal which lead to unhealthy
living condition, put pressure on fragile lands due to the lack of knowledge regarding correct
agricultural practices, deforestation and other forms of pollution which all results to what we call
the environmental issues.

True enough, poverty is also a cause of environmental degradation, but let us not forget
that the worst consequences of environmental deterioration, whether they be economical, social,
or related to mental or physical wellbeing, the ones who are greatly affected are the ones in
poverty-line. As environmental damages increase, the catastrophical impacts become greater,
where the consequences are experienced by the poor because of their vulnerability to hazards. It
is important to recognize the relationship between poverty and environmental issues, especially
by both the community and government. Change starts within one’s self; all individuals should
utilize implementations that could help restore nature back to its finest form. The government of
all countries must also undertake vigorous actions and effort to eradicate both poverty and
environmental degradation for they will both affect each and everyone’s future.
