Learning Objective

The objective of this program is to prepare and develop the understating to technical skills by basic
techniques, creative expression in building construction design process with study of elements of design
color, form, space, 2 D and 3D compositions, theory and principles of design and its study in different
mediums, colors & textures for articulation of abstract ideas. Study of figure ground relationship.

1. Study of different mediums and different ideas of design.


2. Ability to apply elements of design in architecture.
3. Awareness of Principals of design in relation to Architecture Design
4. Critical learning of design elements in construction management
5. Ability to keep themselves abreast with recent developments in the field of design.
6. Focus of the study is figure ground relationship, Design elements study with respect to
building and architectural character.

Learning Methodology

Lectures as provided in the schedule of the semester activities

Study of different designs and recommended books

Understanding the form, colour, shape, texture and density with reference to building design.

Sketching of building design plan, sections and elevations

Presentation and assignments on related topics

Following is the criteria for the distribution of marks to evaluate final grade in a
semester.

Week 1 Introduction to the elements of design including LINE, SHAPE, FORM,


TEXTURE, VALUE AND DENSITY.

Week 2 Introduction to the principle of design including harmony, rhythm,


balance, unity etc. understanding basic attribute of Line.

Week 3 Understanding form in building design and its relationship with ground and
with environment. Form analysis in 2D and 3D.
Week 4 Explore and understand the emotional and spiritual qualities of color and see
colour and form as being inseparable. Contrast in tones.

Week 5 Explore the contrast between different colours and shapes in building design
in as many ways as possible in both 2D and 3D. The importance of Color
and its effects in creating spaces.

Week 6 Techniques to apply texture in design with different materials. Exploring


different materials and their effect in design and planning of a building in
both 2D and 3D.

Week 7 Study of different types of compositions in design in planning of a building.


Form relationship in different compositions with respect to space and ground
in 2D and 3D.
Week 8 Study of pattern in design. Different geometrical floral and abstract
pattern study.

TERM EXAMINATION

Week 9 Study of Harmony in design, the study of colour with respect to harmony in
both 2D and 3D.

Week 10 Study of balance with respect to colour form proportion and shape. Density
of space depth of space.

Week 11 Study of rhythm different types of rhythm found in nature or created


intentionally in design.
Week 12 Study of unity as principle of design and its relation with respect to form and
the whole surroundings.

Week 13 Exploring abstract ideas and implementing in form. Exploring the sketches
based on abstract ideas in term project. Design decisions process faced in
building design.

Material used in designing, the physical and conceptual qualities of material


influencing architecture.
Week 14

Week 15 Submission and presentation of the project.
