ARTICLE 1: How Blockchain technology can help in real world supply chain
management
ARTICLE SOURCE: FIRST POST (Dated Aug 5,2019)
SUMMARY:
This article throws light on how supply chain professionals can use blockchain technology to
gather and use tracking data in new ways. The article discusses in detail how blockchain can
be leveraged to maximise efficiency in Ocean transportation, instant settlement of
transactions, Smart contracts. The effective practices of IBM, Factom & Sku chain are also
discussed.
Critical analysis
Blockchain technology is now being used in the case of virtual currencies like Bitcoin. Its use
can now be extended to real world supply chain management.
-Use of Blockchain in Ocean Transportation:
Why ocean Transportation?
Ocean Freight accounts for 90% of goods traded globally. The ocean transportation is highly
dependent on paperwork. Since shipping information travels through a number of companies
and contractors any delay can cause the goods to be stuck at any checkpoints.
A supply chain blockchain could boost transparency, trust and predictability by allowing
users to track where a shipment is at any given time, change of possession and ownership of
goods can be accounted instantaneously and permanently. The information could be better
protected from tampering or hacks. Data can be manipulated in innovative and dynamic
ways.
-Use of Blockchain in instant settlement of transactions:
Blockchain can be used for instant settlement of transactions which will reduce friction in
commercial financing which underlies global trade and is currently an area where many trade
disputes arise. It also helps in making the dispute resolution easier.
-Block chain used with smart contracts and digital payments greatly reduce time and costs
associated with intermediary processing
Many notable efforts are being carried out to apply blockchain technology to logistics. These
include:
1) Factom’s proprietary document verification and authentication system can be used for
logistics related documentation
2) IBM is partnering with Maersk to create a blockchain based shipping supply chain firm.
3) Skuchain is helping buyers control their inventory procurement across partners
ARTICLE 2: Autopilot mode: There’s vast potential in marketing automation
ARTICLE SOURCE: Financial Express
Syllabus Linkage: Automation
SUMMARY
This article discusses about how the digital wave has influenced the marketing scenario. The
system can be trained to respond like a professional. This throws light to the fact that with
this new digital wave let marketers focus on more strategic and creative aspects of their
campaigns. This helps to chalk out a marketing strategy with customer centricity at its core.
Critical analysis
The ways in which marketing automation can be made more effective are:
1)Getting the messaging right
Account-based (B2B) or profile-based marketing (B2C) campaigns can be designed and
implemented using available tools and platforms. They can define age, gender, preferences,
needs, budget and price preferences under the tool to initiate tailored campaigns. Audiences
could also be directed to personalised content, such as a customised landing page, call-to-
action banner, etc. Chatbots can pass on the necessary information to the sales team in a
structured manner so that they may have more meaningful discussions.
2)Faster Response
According to a 2011 research published in Harvard Business Review, a whopping 23% of
businesses failed to respond to leads. An effective way to bring down the waiting time for
potential leads is to set up a workflow to notify the marketing team when a desired action
(like downloading a file or a text to chatbot) has been taken.
What makes workflows relevant in 2019 is the ability to send much more personalised
messages on behaviour-based actions. For example, when you buy a smartphone on an e-
commerce platform, it shows you complementary products like screen guards, back covers,
earphones, etc, which are commonly bought along with the phone. This not only increases
consumers’ interaction time, but also overall sales.
Automating social media outreach is another point to consider. Social media management
tools allow brands to schedule and auto-publish posts, respond to consumer queries and
comments, and implement bots to respond to messages
Technology is making it easier, cost effective, and measurable to automate several other
aspects of marketing.
ARTICLE 3: Artificial intelligence is changing the teaching-learning process in
education.
ARTICLE SOURCE: INDIA TODAY
SUMMARY:
This article focuses on how AI is revolutionising the teaching learning process by letting
teachers concentrate on building the minds of students instead of checking copies, to tailoring
the learning process for each individual student
PERSONAL VIEWPOINT
On the back of continuous technological advancement, we are witnessing a paradigm shift in
the teaching-learning process. The relationship between educators and students is changing,
where educators have become more approachable and much better at understanding their
students’ perspectives.
How AI among many technological applications are changing the trends in education system
is discussed in detail.
1)AI simplifies Administrative tasks
AI has automated drab administrative tasks and cut down on the time and effort teachers used
to put in things like assessing students’ work and grading exams. With this, teachers can now
direct their energies towards engaging with their students and dealing with challenges that
they are facing. AI is also helping school admission boards by automating classification and
processing of paperwork.
2)AI makes quality education accessible
It is also making quality education more accessible to a larger population in the form of smart
content.
They often offer education through virtual content like video conferencing, lectures, etc.
Even the textbooks have transformed as AI systems are now being used to create digital
textbooks for specific topics/ subjects. This is helping engage students of all academic grades
and ages.
3)Tailoring education as needed
Each student possesses different learning abilities and pace of absorption. They put in place
systems that work according to the needs of the students.
ARTICLE 4: 4 Dimensions of Digital Transformation with the Industrial Internet of
Things.
ARTICLE SOURCE: FORBES
SYLLABUS LINKAGE: IoT
SUMMARY:
This article discussed about the 4 dimensions of digital transformation with industrial internet
things. These are creating a digital footprint, effectiveness, efficiency and transformation.
Critical analysis
Creating a digital footprint
It represents your digital behaviour which include email use, website searches, integration of
Iot. It provides a good portrait of who you are and what you do. Your digital footprint also
generates a lot of data, which is why creating a manufacturing lake is necessary for storing
that data and getting the most efficient use from the information you collect. Hadoop is the
most popular platform for data lakes, but that depends on your data, including volume and
scalability.
Effectiveness: Doing Right Things
Understanding your data and building on that knowledge to improve on KPI will improve
your efficiency. The deeper analytics possibilities from machine data will drive the next
phase of the smart factory. The ability to predict when a machine needs maintenance and the
ability to correlate production conditions with quality outcomes are key enablers for
enhancing effectiveness.
Transformation: Shaping the New Frontier
In manufacturing, the digital transformation relies heavily on the adoption of IoT. Done
smartly, this adoption allows factories the opportunity to reimagine their business models and
how they can grow in more productive ways. The ability through IoT to measure, benchmark
and predict outcomes using machine data is – and will continue to be – transformational for
manufacturing.
