Petrel RE: How to create and modify regions based on

streamlines paths

The definition and modification of local regions of a full field model is a very
common task in reservoir simulation, especially in history matching. Recently,
new methodologies using streamlines to define these regions were developed
(Assisted History Matching).

This document shows a procedure to create and modify “streamline-regions”

using Petrel RE, Eclipse and Frontsim.

1. Run the simulation model in Frontsim and display the streamlines on a 3D

window.
2. Go to the streamlines folder under the Models Tab, and, on the
startwell/endwell filter, select the wells of interest.
3. Expand the streamlines attributes folder, right click on any property and
select Create filter. A new window will show up. Check the Use filter box
and select Display penetrated cells.

• A new filter value will be added in the Value filter folder, in the end of the
Streamlines folder.
4. Go to the Properties folder and select any property. You will be able to
visualize only the grid blocks penetrated by the selected streamlines.
5. Now you can modify the properties values only in these grid blocks.

• TURN OFF the streamline filter

• Copy and paste the grid property you want to modify (Permeability, for
example)
• TURN ON the streamline filter (checking the streamline Value filter box)
• Right click on the Properties folder and select calculator.
• Write the formula “Copy_of_Permeability= Permeability*0.1” (you can use
any multiplier)
• Select an appropriate template (Ki - Permeability)
• CHECK THE BOX USE FILTER
• Press ENTER
6. Now turn off again the streamline filter and display your new property on a 3D
window. You will see that only the “streamlines-grid blocks” are changed.

a) Initial permeability distribution (“permeability”)

b) Modified permeability distribution (“copy_of_permeability”)

7. Use the new properties to build and run a new simulation model in the Define
Simulation Case and check the results for History Matching of the selected
well (you can create many property maps, with many multipliers).
