Chapter 3

This chapter discusses the research methodology used in the study, including the descriptive survey method and questionnaire. The study aims to determine the effects of tardiness on academic performance of PHINMA University of Pangasinan SHS students. 100 grade 12 HUMMS students will answer a survey questionnaire about tardiness and academic performance. Statistical analysis including percentages, means, and chi-square tests will be used to analyze the data and identify correlations between variables.

Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discussed the methodology and procedures of research that was

used in the study. It also presents the specific design, universe, respondents,

research instruments and the statistical tools that will be used for the analysis.

The descriptive survey method will be used with the questionnaire as the main

tool.

RESEARCH DESIGN

In order to determine the effects of tardiness to the academic performance

in PHINMA University of Pangasinan SHS students. The descriptive
correlational method was used. As a descriptive study, detailed information
and factual data were collected to describe the current status of variables or
phenomenon. It was exactly to set out the effects of tardiness to the academic
performance and allowed the researchers to carefully describe and understand
the outcome through the students of PHINMA University of Pangasinan SHS
students from grade 12 HUMMS. This study was descriptive because it
required researchers to explore the impact between variables using statistical
analysis.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

In order to cater to the questions of correlations between tardiness and year

level or course, the study will focus on 100 Grade 12 humms students in
PHINMA – University of Pangasinan.
RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

The researchers choose to conduct the study in PHINMA University of

Pangasinan to gather the needed data. 100 grade 12 HUMMS students in

PHINMA – University of Pangasinan are chosen as sample. They would answer

the survey questionnaire prepared by the researchers in their office and stalls

respectively.

DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENT

The researchers chose a survey research design because it best served to

answer the questions and the purposes of the study. The survey research is
one in which a group of people or items is studied by collecting and analyzing
data from only a few people or items considered to be representative of the
entire group. In other words, only a part of the population is studied, and
findings from this are expected to be generalized to the entire population
(Nworgu 1991:68). The survey asses’ public opinion or individual
characteristics by the use of questionnaire.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

Before the actual conduct of the gathering of data, the following steps
will need to perform by the researchers:

(1) Prepare an authorized letter to distribute to the respondents as formal

written permissions for data collections.

(2) Prepare questionnaires beforehand.

(3) Setting a favorable date of the researchers and the respondents when to
conduct the actual collection of data through surveys and interviews.

(4) Start the process of gathering data.

(5) After the collection, start doing the analysis and interpretation among
researcher’s members.

(6) Present the findings.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT

The gathered data were tabulated and computed accordingly. The number of

tardy students from the respondents was tabulated and the percentage was

calculated. The same procedure was done separately for the each section.

To show the correlations between tardiness and the section, the researchers

used the chi-square test, which is a statistical test that evaluates the

difference between observed and expected frequencies. The observed

frequencies (fo) will be the number of tardy students per course. The expected

frequency (fe) is calculated by multiplying the total frequency and the

proportion of the category. The proportion is the percentage of tardy students

of the whole sample.

The average of the ranks the respondents gave to the provided reasons and

factors were calculated.

1. For percentage computation is 2. For mean computation is

% = f / n x 100 (x1 * p1) + ( x2 * p2 ) + ( x3 * p3 ) / N

Where: Where:

% = percentage x = is total of your result

F = no. of respondents for every item N = total no. of your respondents

N = total no. of respondents

Weight Scale Verbal Interpretation

4.50 – above 5 Strongly agree

3.50 – 4.49 4 Agree

2.50 – 3.49 3 Moderately agree

1.50 – 2.49 2 Disagree

Below – 1.50 1 Strongly Disagree
