Lectors Guidelines
Lectors Guidelines
Thank you for your generosity in serving our community by proclaiming the Word of God
during Mass. To assist you in fulfilling this important ministry, please read and learn the
following information.
Preparation:
1. Be sure to dress appropriately. Closed toed shoes for men are preferable; no denim-wear,
sleeveless shirts, or shorts.
2. Do not be in a state of rush, arrive at least 10 minutes early to check in with the sacristan
in the sacristy and take your place in the pew.
3. There is a pronunciation guide in the sacristy available for use. You can also find an
audio version of the Gospel at usccb.org.
4. If you can’t serve on an assigned Sunday, please find an alternate or contact the office.
During Mass:
1. Please begin Mass by sitting in the front pew on the left as you face the altar. After
you’ve finished reading, you may return to sit wherever you please.
2. The Responsorial will be sung, so Lector’s are needed only for the 1st and 2nd readings.
As you approach the steps of the sanctuary, stop and bow to the altar. If a cantor is going
to or coming from the ambo, bow in unison with them.
3. Please proclaim the Scripture clearly, with appropriate volume and even measure. It
should not be read as poetry or in a public speaking performance tone, but with the
deliberate dignity proper to the Word of God.
4. The microphone is very sensitive and should not need adjusted or positioned close to
your mouth.
5. After the 2nd Reading is concluded, please close the Lectionary and place it on the
Creedance table behind the ambo.
Thank you!
