Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) which belongs to the family Hepadnaviridae. HBV is the only DNA virus among the major hepatitis viruses (A, B, C, D, E, G) and contains reverse transcriptase. It is transmitted through contact with infectious blood or body fluids like semen and saliva. HBV infection can lead to acute or chronic hepatitis and in some cases develops into liver cirrhosis or liver cancer. Vaccination provides effective protection against HBV infection.
