35 youths to train on environmentalism

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines—While other teens would rather enjoy their summer vacation free of school
work, 35 youths from Eastern Visayas will spend about a month this summer learning how to care for the
environment.

The youths, aged 12 years old to 30 years old, are the new scholars of the Young Minds Academy (YMA), a
youth leadership and development program of the Cebu City-based Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (Rafi).

Started in 2006, the YMA is a youth development and citizenship program of Rafi that aims to develop young
emerging leaders to become responsible and pro-active citizens as well as accountable leaders, Rafi media
coordinator Harold de Mesa said in an email.

For the first time this summer, the YMA would conduct the summer edition to train and develop young leaders
from the region, he said.

Under the regular YMA program, scholars are either residents of or are working or studying in Cebu where
they attend learning sessions during weekends and holidays.

The holding of the YMA summer edition, which focuses on the environment, would make the program available
to more young people from outside of Cebu.

The scholars will focus on coastal waters and watersheds, clean energy and climate change , and mining and
logging.

The program will include leadership training, creative thinking and basic social development sessions, a one-
day adventure and exposure to urban issues particularly in Cebu where they would have their 10 days of
learning sessions that will start on April 20.
