Teaching Profession

As a future teacher, it is important to have a strong philosophy of education to guide teaching practices. This philosophy will reflect how a teacher interacts with students and parents and provide a framework for daily lessons. It is also essential to understand concepts like morality, vocation, and mission to teach with purpose and as a role model. Additionally, teachers must understand standards like the National Competency-Based Teachers Standards and how to teach 21st century learners. Building strong relationships between the school, parents, and community is critical to supporting student success. The Teaching Profession

"Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all" -Aristotle

Chapter One

You, the Teacher, as a Person in Society

Our thoughts, values, and actions are somehow shaped by events and by people with
whom we come in contact. We, in turn, help shape society- its events, its people, and its
destiny.

Your Philosophical Heritage

There are Philosophies of education.

 Essentialism – teachers teach for learners to acquire basic knowledge, skills and
values.

 Progressivism –accept the impermanence of life and the inevitability of change.

 Perennialism– is a universal one on the view that all human beings possess the
same essential nature.

 Existentialism– “to help students understand and appreciate themselves as

unique individuals who accept complete responsibility for their thoughts feelings
and actions.”

 Behaviorism– concerned with the modification of students’ behavior by providing

for a favorable environment, since they believe that they are product of their
environment.

As a future teacher, I should have a philosophy of education. A philosophy is a strong

belief that translated into action. My philosophy will guide me on what I teach, how I
teach, why I teach among others.

Formulating your Philosophy of Education

“Your philosophy of education is your “window” to the world and “compass” in life.”
It is important to have our personal philosophy because it will reflect on us in dealings
with dealings with our students and students’ parents. It will guide us in our teaching
career. It will serve as a blue print in our daily life.

The Foundational Principles of Morality and You

Morality- “the quality of human acts by which we call them right or wrong, good or evil.”
(Panizo, 1964)

As a future teacher we must understand the meaning of morality and learn how to apply
it. In our field we are the example for our students. So in part of our teaching by doing
good and leaving evil things, we must do it first and show them that we are the good
example.

Teaching as Your Vocation, Mission and Profession

 VOCATION comes from the Latin word “vocare” which means “to call”.

 MISSION comes from the Latin word “misio” which means “to send”.
Teaching is a mission and vocation. It is a calling that we are willingly to do. We are
willing to serve and give help for those that we need us and also for the students that
want to learn. It is also a mission, an assigned task. We expected to have an
accomplishment and improvement in our students.

As a future teacher we must have a heart in teaching not knowledge. But a heart, that
will touch and inspire our future students to learn.

Chapter Two

Lesson 1

The National Competency-Based Teachers Standards (NCBTS)

As a future teacher, NCBTS is very important in our career. As we all know NCBTS is a
framework that gives the whole aspect about effective teaching in addressing and
meeting the needs of every student through different learning activities, assessment
method in facilitating the multiple intelligence of the student. It is our basis of how a
teacher should be inside and outside the classroom an also on how we should perform
and act as a teacher in front of everyone. We can also use the NCBTS as:
 my guide for me to be effective in delivering my lessons

 my benchmark in planning, creating and putting into actions activities and

strategies that promotes equality among my diverse learners

 my checklist of the things i need to do for me to develop and grow as a teacher

 my daily reminder of the things i should and i shouldn’t do as a future teacher. It

reminds me of my duties and responsibilities as a practice teacher

 my improvement/ development meter as I venture the world of practice teaching

I believe that it will truly help me/us as a future teacher. It is clearly describes the things
that I/we must do to achieve or meet the standards of becoming a true teacher.

Lesson 2

The 21st Century Teacher

Since this generation is involving to technology. We, as a future teachers or the

21st century teacher, need to learn how to use technology and other things that we will
be needed in our field. The 21 st century teacher is a teacher with 21st-century skills and
tools is one who can integrate strong communication skills with manageable technology
skills. So I think that these 4 key characteristics will truly help us as future teachers, to
handle the 21st century learner’s effective communication skills, learning and innovation
skills, info, media and technology skills, and life and career.

Today’s students are more competitive than the old one. So as a future teacher, we
should only facilitate them and let them do the activities by their own. Since we have
students-centered, we need to think good instructional materials, lessons and activities
which are authentic and useful to them. We need to arouse their interest to learn and
listen to the lesson and activities.

Also, we must be aware to the changes of the generation. We need to make sure that
our materials and activities are accurate for the learning of the students.

Lesson 3

School and community Relations

Schools, parents, and the community should work together to promote the health, well
being, and learning of all students. When schools actively involve parents and engage
community resources they are able to respond more effectively to the health-related
needs of students. The Effective partnerships between schools and parents and
communities can result in better outcomes for students. The better the relationship and
engagement, the more positive the impact on students’ learning.

School and community can exchange their ideas to have better programs for the
community and schools. As I remember all public school of elementary and high school
are conduction a Brigada program which the students, teachers, parents, and other
people are helping each other to clean the surroundings of the school. It is a voluntary
work; it needs time, efforts and resources willingly shared by both of them. Another one
is PTA which the teachers and parents are cooperating for the betterment of the school
and the students.

Lesson 4

Linkages and Networking with Organizations

The school and its community can be join force in pursuing mutually beneficial
and productive programs and projects for the good interest of all. This is important
because they will be collaborating for the betterment of the students.

This lesson deals with the international connections and exchanging the ideas of the
same needs. Linkages could be established between universities and colleges offering
degrees. Cross-enrollment for subjects needed for graduation is allowed.

Also, in our universities we have an exchange students program, were the students will
be able to go to the other school to socialize and exchange ideas in each other’s
culture. As future teachers, we will be able to collaborate to other countries and school
to parallel objectives and service.

Chapter 3

Lesson 1

Global Education and the Global teacher

Global Education is not a subject, but a dimension that runs through the curriculum, an
extra filter to help children make sense of all the information and opinion the world is
throwing at them. It is a way of approaching everything we teach and how we teach it. It
broadens horizons and encourages exploration of all subjects from a global perspective.
It contributes to the whole curriculum and enhances our understanding of the world.
However, a global teacher is an educator that incorporates various global issues into
their curriculum including multiculturalism, economic, environmental and social issues.
The teacher expands the scope of their viewpoint beyond the normal boundaries of the
local classroom, as students learn about diversity and how they fit into the global
society.

Global teaching encompasses a range of interests that can cover anything from how
other students live in another culture to environmental issues. Global teaching facilitates
an open-minded approach; it implements lessons that illustrate the perspective of other
people in the world that may not have the same cultural values and traditions as the
students. It is important to learn about other cultures to gain a deeper understanding of
how to approach global issues and communicate more effectively.

Lesson 2

A Closer Look on the Education System of Selected Countries

In this lesson many countries are being recognized in their educational system. I noticed
that all of them are requiring the basic education. But there are different years in every
level, primary or secondary. Kindergarten or pre-school is now compulsory because of
the Republic act 10157.

Some countries are already implementing the K to 12 program and they have a
successful students and skillful students. In the Philippines, we are now implementing K
to 12 programs which will add 2 years in high school. I think its goo because the
students will holistically develop and they will be skillful. So the basic education is now
equal with other countries.

Lesson 3

Multicultural Diversity: A Challenge to Global Teachers

As our world becomes increasingly interconnected and interdependent, student must

graduate with the attitudes, knowledge, and skills to live and work in a global society.
Classrooms are also becoming more global. Therefore, there is a growing need for
educators to develop global competencies in themselves and their students.

A globally competent teacher must not only develop globally competencies in

themselves, but also possess the skills to instill global competency in their students.
Such skills specific to educators include: to create a classroom environment that values
diversity and global engagement, to integrate learning experiences that promote
content-aligned explorations of the world, to facilitate international and intercultural
conversations and partnerships, and to assess students’ global competence. As future
teachers, we must be aware to the diversity of the students. We need to prepare them
to be globally competitive. We need to give all their needs to become globally
competitive.

Lesson 4

Broadening Teaching Perspectives: Teacher Exchange Programs

To become a global teacher, you need to broaden your teaching perspective. Expanding
your experiences beyond the confines of your classroom to the wider learning
environment of the world is one of the many avenues in order to achieve a level of
global competitiveness. A Global Teacher in this program is described as someone who:

thinks and act both locally and globally;

embraces the world’s rich variety of ways of life’

understand how world is interconnected.

is committed to making the world a more equitable place;

believes in education for sustainable development

has professional and personal skills to share and to learn;

brings the world into their classroom, school and community;

encourages dialogue and partnership between the North and the South

can inspire others to act as Global teachers.

The various activities of the Global Teacher Exchange Program have provided learning
experiences to the participating teachers in the development of their personal and
professional lives. It is interesting to note that these programs give teachers the
opportunity to live their personal and professional lives in another context, in another
setting, in another country, thus strengthening their skills in understanding diversity and
multiculturalism.

Chapter Four

This chapter explains the basic laws on the professionalization of teaching. The
Professionalization in Teaching recognize as part of passion. In teaching we need to
have rule, regulation and qualification, to secure our rights and obligations. As a teacher
we have lots of rules and regulation that we need to follow. Of course, as a teacher we
have qualification. There are 3 acts that will help us to fully understand the basic laws
on the professionalization of teaching.

In Presidential Decree No.1006 providing for the Professionalization of teachers

different constitution and objectives in the department of education and culture. It is also

Republic act. No 7836 an act to strengthen the regulation and supervision of the
practice of teaching in the Philippines and prescribing a licensure examination for
teachers and for other purposes covered also the rules and regulation on taking the
board exam and the process of result. The future teacher must know about the different
transaction and way for taking board exam. This part of discussion covered the
professionalization of teacher and the development. It gives way to determine how the

Republic Act. No.9293 otherwise known as the Philippine Teachers Professionalization

Act of 1994 discusses the requirements of teachers and also the qualification of teacher.
It provide a lot of understanding about how and what the laws in Basic Education. For
the future teachers this chapter determines the effectiveness of Basic Laws in
Education for Professionalization of Teaching.

This act will help us in our teaching career. Being oriented to this laws we will be able to
know our duties and responsibilities as a teacher in our students. It will also secure our
rights as a teacher.
Teaching as a Profession. ... Profession is derived from the word
“profiteor” meaning to profess. The connotation here is that a professional is a person
who possesses knowledge of something and has a commitment to a particular set of
values both of which are generally well accepted characteristics of professions.

Profession of teaching is based upon a specialization on a certain field, teaching skills,

didactics and some certain personal characteristics that the profession requires.
