Introduction
The study of absenteeism is very crucial in the performance of the students. This
seems to be a big issue now-a-days because it not only affects the attendance of the students
but it may also lead to different complications especially to their performance in school and
guardian, as well as for the students in particular. Not attending to school in regular basis for
students affects their school performance especially when they are in a group or teamwork
for their activities and tasks in school. According to Schmidt in 1983, absenteeism affects the
students’ capability to get high scores in which it can cause that they may fail and there is
also a possibility that the students might have to recap the same year level. Absenteeism of
student is usual but when the ratio increases, that directly affects the school performance
(Gupta 2013). This issue changes many lives because it has long term effects which also
affect their future success, jobs and their life in the future. Students need to value their
education and see the beauty of having it. They need to understand that attending classes on
regular basis does matter and also helping students understand that consistently attending
school improves achievement and gives those increased opportunities when they graduate.
students may miss some activities and lessons in their school but it will become a problem if
students will be absent from school for many days. Kamla Raj quoted in his article in 2011,
Absenteeism affects the abilities of students which can be the reason of the decreasing of
their grades and in the result of this, the students may get failed and they have to repeat same
year level. Performance of students becomes important and effective when they attend the
classes on regular basis and it has positive impacts on the performance. Students who are
attending the classes on regular basis are the ones who get higher grades and marks in the
examination than those students who got absent from classes. The report of Bowen in 2005
has also established that students who attend classes more regularly seem to be more
successful in their studies than those who are regularly absent. In addition, students that
attend class regularly are more likely to remember well the information and apply the
absenteeism may also affect to how they act around people. When students are away from
for no reason, there is a possibility that they might involve to any activities that can cause
harm to them and to the society. It is difficult for teachers and students to build skills and
progress of large numbers of students are frequently absent. In addition to falling behind in
academics, students who are not in school on a regular basis are more likely to get into
trouble with the law and cause problems in their communities (Hocking, 2008).
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
intentional failure to attained school. This issue still exists in every school until now which
sometimes result to students being not interested at all in the class because of being used to
being absent. AMA Computer College Cebu campus is also facing the same issue.
According to a faculty member, Absenteeism has been a major problem of the entire
team in AMA Computer College Cebu Campus. During the first day of the first semester,
the attendance of the Grade 12 students was perfect. There were no absences during the first
two weeks of the month of June. As the month of July was getting closer, he noticed that
some of them are starting to have excuses. In the week of July, it was already alarming
because the number of students who were absent was increasing compare to the previous
weeks. The academic performance of the Grade 12 students who were absent were affected
compared to the students who were always present in the class. Most of the students in
Grade 12 said that no matter how many absences they have, they will always pass the subject
because of their online quizzes. They don’t mind about their face to face learning in school
which is the most important factor compared to their online activities. In the last week of
August 2018, the instructor of Grade 12 students conducted an emergency meeting with all
his students with regard to their absences and most of them don’t even have a valid reason
to convince their instructor why they are absent and he also found out that even the parents
of his Grade 12 students were not aware that their son and daughter were absent in the class.
The effects, especially the long term effects of this habit can affect their future
success, jobs and their life in the future. Therefore, we feel that this problem is very serious.
As such, we take responsibility to investigate and find a solution to this problem because this
Absenteeism continues to become an alarming problem that still exists until now.
Sometimes, even how good or beautiful the school environment is, it still doesn’t matter to
students who are in to absenteeism. This is because a student who commits absenteeism gets
used to it and already thinks of it as a natural habit. They might think that this habit is just a
small thing that can’t affect to them without knowing that this practice will create a bad
impact to their future. The researchers really want to investigate and put an end if possible to
this issue at hand. Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:
A. age
B. gender
C. Track or Course
4. Is there really a significant relationship between the students’ absenteeism and their
academic performance?
5. Based on the findings of the study, what recommendations can be formulated in order to
The study will be conducted in AMA Computer College Cebu Campus which is
located in S. Cabahug corner President Roxas Street Casals Village, Mabolo Cebu City. The
respondents will be the grade 12 students from the said school. The study will aim to
coming from different strands during their first semester of school year 2018-2019. The
researchers will conduct a survey by means of answering questions at the same time getting
information by the use of the academic records and attendance records from their instructor.
The result and findings of this study will be relevant to the following:
Students. They will find out the effects of absenteeism to their academic performances and
it will make them aware of the possible consequences they have to face in their future lives if
they will continue this bad habit. They will also be disciplined to attend classes on regular
basis and also will do the other moral values that need to be presented in the classroom not
only to their classmates, teachers but also to the people around them. It will also encourage
the students and gain their attention after understanding the consequences to their bad habit.
Teachers. This study will help them to understand the issue at the same time they will be
able to identify those students who commits absenteeism so that they can take action on
what to do with the issue. It will help them to bring change in the classroom if needed and
attending classes has importance which can improve their achievements in school and also
to their future lives. Students can do action to lessen or put an end to this issue to where
they live in and to also keep the society in a safe hands because as what our famous quote
