I. READING COMPREHENSION. Read the story carefully.

Clever Cao Chung
In ancient China, Sun Quan gave an elephant to Cao Cao. Cao Cao’s officials who heard
about this very big animals were very curious. They all came to see the elephant.
“It is huge as a wall!” they all exclaimed.
“How heavy do you think it is?” Cao Cao asked.
“In order to know, we should weigh it,” said Tan Yu, the first official.
“Then what are you waiting for? Weigh the elephant,” said Cao Cao.
“But how should we weigh it?” chorused the officials. “It wouldn’t fit in our weighing scale.”
“Let’s build a large scale,” suggested Sun Hi, the second official.
“That won’t do,” objected Chen Ha, the third official. The only possible way is to kill the
elephant and cut it into pieces for weighing.”
“That’s ridiculous!” Cao Cao said.”I’m sure there are other ways aside from killing the
elephant!”
Cao Chong, Cao Cao’s seven-year-old son, heard his father’s angry voice and came out.
“Is there a problem, my dear Father?”
The officials told Cao Chong the problem.
“I can weigh it.” he said confidently. ”Help me lead the elephant into the large boat in the river.”
The officials did not know what Cao Chong was up to, but they helped him lead the elephant
into the boat.
The boat began to sink and rock with the weight of the elephant. When it became steady, Cao
Chong drew a line on the side of the boat where the water level was.
“Now, please help me lead the elephant to the shore,” he asked the officials.
After elephant left the boat, Cao Chong asked his father to tell the workers to load the boat
with stones.
“Don’t stop loading until the red line and the water level join,” he told them.
“Oh, we understand what you are up to,” said the officials. The weight of the stone is the same
as the weight of the elephant.”
Cao Cao looked as the men weighed the rocks from the boat. Now he knew the weight of the
elephant.
“My son, you are a clever boy,” he said. “We didn’t have to build a large scale or cut the
elephant into pieces in order to know how heavy it is. You deserve to be my son.”
