This study aims to determine the effects of using banana and lanzones peels as fertilizers for siling labuyo plants. Siling labuyo is a staple pepper in Filipino households and has many health benefits. The researchers hypothesize that banana peel will affect the growth of siling labuyo plants more than lanzones peel. They plan to compare the growth of plants fertilized with banana peel, lanzones peel, and just water. The goal is to identify a cheap and readily available organic fertilizer to efficiently grow beneficial siling labuyo plants.

INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
This scientific investigation focuses on determining the effects of banana and lanzones
peel as fertilizer to the growth development of the siling labuyo plant. Siling labuyo
(Capsicum frutescens) is a small chili pepper cultivar that developed in
the Philippines after the Columbian Exchange. It is characterized by triangular fruits
which grow pointing upwards (Wikipedia, 2019). The siling labuyo plant is a staple in
many Filipino households. It has many benefits and nutrients, such as relief to arthritis
and rheumatism. It can also bring down blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol, prevent
blood clots, halt bleeding quickly, and knock out cold and flu miseries. It can also reduce
risk of heart diseases and tuberculosis. In addition it is an ulcer healer (WordPress, 2010).
This prompted the researchers to conduct an investigation on how to effectively and
quickly grow quality siling labuyo plant using cheap and readily available fertilizer such
as banana and lanzones peel.
Bananas are packed with nutrients, and that includes their peels. Adding banana peels
around prized plants is a widespread gardening practice that can improve your soil
(Homeguides, 2019). Lanzones (Larum domesticum) is in truth beneficial and even its
peelings. Their peeling is good for crops as fertilizer for it has nutrients needed by plants
(Cheap Custom Paper, 2013). There are several researches conducted that are somewhat
similar to this investigation, such as one research entitled “Different Formulation of Fruit
Peel Extract” wherein the scientists tested different ways on how to extract a variety of
fruit peels to use as fertilizer. The researchers used many methods to extract the fruit
peels, such as mixing the peels with water, pureeing, and cutting into small pieces.
Another study tackled the pros and cons of using banana peel as fertilizer for plants. The
scientists who conducted said study listed a few downsides and advantages of using
banana peel. An example of disadvantage listed was the use of pesticides on bananas
during the process of growing the fruit, which would be harmful to the plant being
experimented on.
As stated earlier, siling labuyo is very beneficial to one’s health. It contains a lot of
copper, which is important for strong bones and healthy neurons. These siling labuyo
peppers also have beta carotene which the body converts to Vitamin A that reduces the
risk of heart attack and is essential to heart health (Healthline, 2019). Today’s generation
also has a lot of problems with obesity and being overweight which leads to heart and
liver ailments. Capsaicin, which is an active component in siling labuyo peppers, has been
studied as a holistic method for weight loss (Nutrition and You, 2017). Siling labuyo
peppers can also help prevent allergies and symptoms caused by allergies because of the
anti-inflammatory benefits found in capsaicin. If the study will be proven effective, then
it will be helpful to other flora that have similar components and factors with the anatomy,
parts, and growth of the siling labuyo plant in a way that the experiment will produce a
fertilizer that is readily available and relatively cheap. This may also help increase the
amount of production of siling labuyo as well as the benefits and uses that come with it.
Questions for Investigation
The integral aim of this study is to answer the questions:
1. Which is more effective to use as a fertilizer for siling labuyo plant, banana peel
or lanzones peel?
2. What is the difference in the growth of siling labuyo plant when using fertilizers
and when just using water?
3. Will the banana peel or the lanzones peel affect the growth of the siling labuyo
plant?
Hypothesis
The banana peel affects the growth of the siling labuyo plant more than the
lanzones peel.
