1.) What is MICE in the tourism industry?

- MICE stands for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions

- The MICE market refers to a specialized niche of group tourism dedicated to planning, booking,
and facilitating conferences, seminars, and other events, which is a big moneymaker in the travel
industry.

- It is a type of tourism in which large groups, usually planned well in advance, are brought together
for a particular purpose. It’s an important industry because MICE visitors are usually on business
and often spend more than leisure travelers.

Meeting - Is a general term indicating the coming together of a number of people in one place, to
confer or carry out a particular activity.

Example: Board meetings for corporate group, Establish meeting objects, Financial seminars for
overseas investors

Incentive - Meeting event as part of a program which is offered to its participants to reward a
previous performance.

Example: Awarding ceremony, Reception are conducted by the head office directors for high-
performing employees

Conference - participatory meeting designed for discussion, fact-finding, problem solving and
consultation.

Example: Educational sessions, Meetings/discussion to an organized events

Exhibitions - can generally be portrayed as ‘presentations of products and services to

an invited audience with the object of inducing a sale or informing the visitors.’

Example: Cultural and sporting events, Art exhibition, International film festival

3.) What are the local and global trends in MICE industry?

Local
The country has established Manila, Cebu and Davao as key MICE destinations. These places offer
not only the best of tourism products and services with vast opportunities for business, but also
have consistently growing local economies which have attracted investors to build hotel and
meeting facilities.

Manila is known to have pioneered Asia’s MICE industry with the establishment of the Philippine
International Convention Center (PICC), setting the trend for neighboring countries to build their
own. The SMX Convention Center is also another world-class facility for international exhibitions,
local trade events, conventions and corporate functions. Its proximity to the SM Mall of Asia
integrates business with recreation, shopping and entertainment. The World Trade Center (WTC)
is also a perfect and convenient place for conventions and exhibitions. Manila takes center stage
with a distinct combination of character, professionalism, history and style with an array of tourist
spots and recreational activities.

Contrary to the agile lifestyle the metro offers, Cebu is a favorite getaway destination for those
seeking a co-existence of casual function and exciting leisure. Today, the island has one of the
fastest growing economies in the country. Far from being just a leisure destination, Cebu is now
one of the prime destinations for MICE with its improved facilities, the presence of an international
airport, chained-brand hotels and convention halls of international standards. Cebu is

Advanced technology - gone are the days when an event/meeting just required a computer and
overhead projector. All meeting venues now need to put their best foot forward in terms of
technology. High speed internet connectivity, state of the art audio-visuals and automation are
more of a necessity than a luxury. Use of virtual assistants, virtual and augmented reality are now
what is considered innovative and unique. Similarly web casting, live streaming and video
conferencing are emerging as new features so that experts all over the world can interact with the
participants.

Enhanced Connectivity- connectivity goes hand in hand with improved technology. The advent
of social media in everyday life has now become an indispensible tool in the MICE industry.
Thanks to social platforms like Facebook, Twitter etc, people are able to build and maintain
connections even before and after the events. This leads to meaningful connections and community
– building systems for all parties rather than providing just a brief interaction during the meeting.
Participation in polls and surveys provides statistical data which can be analyzed to predict future
trends and expectations.

Location Flexibility - the demand has clearly shifted from traditional boardrooms and conference
halls to more personalized run-of-the-mill places in terms of venues. This helps in creating tailor
made experiences for the guests. Outdoor locations like old mills, caves, boats, farms, beaches are
on offer each bringing with it a unique flavor. Likewise, in the indoor spaces, there are emotionally
intelligent event spaces such as sensory lounges, recreational rooms and experience zones that help
