BJ. HABIBIE
Bacharudin Jusuf Habibie or B.J. Habibie is the third president of Indonesia. He was born in
Pare-pare, South Sulawesi on June 25th, 1636. His father is Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie an
Agriculturist from Gorontalo, and is mother is Tuti Marini Puspowardoyo, whose has a royal
blood family from Jogjakarta. He has 1 brother, Jusuf Efendi Habibie. His brother is a former
ambassador of United Kingdom and Netherlands
Habibie’s wife is Hasri Ainun Besari he is a medical doctor. Their married is from May 1962
until her wife, Ainun death in May 2010. Habibie and Ainun had two sons, they are Ilham
Akbar Habibie and Thareq Kemal Habibie. After his wife, Ainun died, Habibie published a
book titled Habibie & Ainun. The book has been adapted into a film which premier is on
December 20th, 2012.
B.J. Habibie is an engineer. He entered to Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) but he
didn’t finish his study in ITB because he got a scholarchip to study in Germany. He took
aerospace engineering at Rhein Westfalen Aachen Technische Hochscule (RWTH), an
institute technology in Germany. In 1960, he graduated with maximum score (9.5). after he
finished his study at university he applied for a job at Firma Tablot, a train industry company.
Habibie continue his doctoral degree at Technische Hochscule Die Facultaet Fuer
Maschinenwesen Aachean. In 1965, he finished his doctoral degree and received the grade of
“very good” for his dissertation. Habibie accepted a work at Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm
in Hamburg. He worked for Messerschmitt on the development of the Airbus A-300 aircraft.
In 1974, Suharto, the first president of Indonesia, asked Habibie to came home to Indonesia.
Habibie has an assistant Ibnu Sutowo, the CEO of Pertamina. In 1976, Habibie was made to
be the Chief Executive Officer of the new state-owned enterprise Industri Pesawat Terbang
Indonesia (IPTN). In 1985, the name was changed to Inconesian Aviation Industry or now
known as Indonesian Aerospace (Dirgantara).
In 1978, Soeharto asked him, Habibie was as Minister of Research and Technology. He
continued to play an important role in IPTN. Under his leadership, IPTN become a
manufacturer of aircraft including Puma helicopters and CASA plane. In 1995, Habibie flew
an N-250 (Gatotkaca). However, the project was not success.
n his politic career, Habibie became a member of Golkar organization, one of the big
organisation in Indonesia. On March 1998, Habibie was elected as the Vice President of
Indonesia. At the same time, there were a big crisis in Indonesia which made a lot of people
hold a huge demonstration to ask Suharto to step down from his position as the President of
Indonesia. Then, Habibie was pointed as the third President of Indonesia.
