Direction: Read the selection below and answer the questions that follow. Write only the LETTER of the correct answer.
1 The Greek god, Hercules, was not only known for his strength. He was also known for his athletic prowess. To encourage
people to visit the temple at Olympia, Hercules held many athletic events. These included spear throwing, wrestling, boxing and
chariot races. Hercules was the umpire for the games and would award a crown of olive leaves to the winner.
2 During the games, one group of people stood out. They were called the Spartans and they were known for being great
athletes. During the Olympic games, they won the majority of the awards. As a result, they were put in charge of defending the
temple at Olympia.
3 The Olympic games brought a lot of attention to the temple. People left offerings at the temple shrines and those offerings
were used to beautify the temple and make it more ornate. Many processions were also held in honor of the gods during the
Olympic games.
4 The temple was decorated with sculptures and paintings from famous artists who donated their time and talents. One of the
most famous sculptures was a statue of the god Jupiter. It was carved from ivory and accented with gold and jewels.The gardens
of the temple were also full of statues. Anytime an athlete won one of the games, a sculptor was commissioned to create a life-
size statue. Those statues, along with the statues of lesser gods, filled the temple's gardens and groves.
5 Athletics were not the only talents on display during the Olympic games. Musicians and poets competed as well. In between
matches, they would perform their latest songs and poems for the crowds. Storytellers would also tell stories. They would then
be judged on their skills.
6 The Olympic games were held every four years. The people counted down the days until the games. Men practiced for the
games as much as possible. For over a thousand years, the games took place every year and became the way for the temple of
Olympia to make a name for itself.

1 People in Ancient Greece were known for believing in many different gods and goddesses. Each one played a different role in their
culture and had different powers. All of the gods and goddesses worked to help the people of Ancient Greece as they went about
their day-to-day activities.
2 The head god was Zeus, the father of many other gods, including Hermes, Apollo and Athena. He lived at the top of Mount
Olympus and was often called the king of the gods. His emotions ruled his actions. When Zeus was angry, he would throw lightning
bolts down from the sky. When he was happy, good things would happen to the people of Greece. If someone faced a string of bad
luck, they knew it was because Zeus was upset with them.
3 Zeus' grandmother was called Gaia and she is known for creating the Earth. Many of the Ancient Greeks referred to her as the
Earth Mother. In addition to forming the Earth, her main job was to protect Zeus from harm.
4 Another famous god in Ancient Greece was Athena. She was known at the goddesses of wisdom and helped people make
decisions and guide them. Her symbol is the owl, an animal known for its wisdom. She is a main character is a famous piece of
Ancient Greek literature called The Odyssey by Homer. In that epic poem, Athena guides Odysseus home after the Trojan War.
5 Poseidon is also a god found in The Odyssey. He was an angry God who wanted to punish Odysseus for harming his son
Prometheus. Poseidon's symbol was his trident which he used to rule over the sea and to cause earthquakes.
6 Apollo was a sky god. He was one of Zeus' sons and was known for being very wise. Because of his ability to see the future,
individuals in Ancient Greece often prayed to him for guidance and wisdom concerning decisions.
7 Another of Zeus' sons, Hermes, was known as a messenger God. He was sneaky and like to play tricks on other gods. However, he
also had an important role. His job was to take people to the afterlife when they died and protect them from any obstacles that
might get in their way.
